petsmart 30lbs of reef grade or oolite for 19.99 dont mess with that wet live crap its a bunch of bull!!!

Actually it's not, it's full of live bacteria. Were did you get your information that it is crap?

Try reading up I would love for you to explain how BACTERIA is still living in a airtight bag with no oxygen ...sitting in a box with no light for god knows how long ...yes there is a date on the bags ...I used to sell the stuff ..... I have recieved them frozen solid .. practicly on fire in the summer .... Also I am not into buying 20 pounds of water and sand .. Id rather buy 20 pounds of sand for half the price and get a good starter cup from one of my Bros's..... further more I have read several articles on just this topic I really wish I could remember where they were I would refrence them ............But I really dont care that much ...Its my opinion I think I still can have those ....Right

where did you get your information from ....the bag ??? the only bacteria in those bags is dead bacteria ..which still can be benificial in helping your ammonia cycle ...... but thats all .....IMO

Sorry to the OP as Debates like this can happen ...I was just giving my thoughts and pointing out a great deal on sand as you requested ...

we actually looked at it under a microscope, pretty much scientific proof that the bacteria in the sand was alive. I once thought it to be dead as you do, but I was proven wrong by seeing it alive.

Whether is live or not, IMO, its still not worth it. Not to start a debate but the presence of bacteria alone doesn't guarantee much since several strains of non-nitrifying bacteria wil also thrive in wet conditions. Although I am sure some nitrobacter are present, unless you are using the proper gram negative stains its hard to say exactly whats there and in what concentration.

Given the exponential growth of nitrifying bacteria in the presence of a nutrient source, either way, I would venture that you will have the same bacterial population within a few days if you start with "sterile" sand. Since sand is sold by the pound, I would much rather pay for sand, not water.

Your best and cheapest bet is to try and find true calcium carbonate tropical playsand like Southdown. However, in these parts, its hard to find. I have had good luck with the CaribSea brand.

When I filled my 360 I used 15 bags of southdown type sand and 4 bags of the live sand stuff to seed it. Worked well for me.

Worth the money to fill a complete tank with the live stuff, IMO no way.

To seed a tank with a bag or too with different bacteria yes.

I also use the caribsea dry sand and seed it with a mature tank. I just sarted a tank three weeks ago. 90 lbs dry sand and one cup of mature sand from my other tank and in three weeks already have bubbles and all kinds of critter tunnels throught the whole bed so I wouldn't waste the money on the wet stuff. I have done an ebtire tank with it before and didn't have the same result as above

:) wow well sounds like a trip to petsmart they have 40 lbs dry for 26 bucks thanks every one . :strooper:
is that the good stuff like southdown?

southdown is not the good stuff, it's the cheap stuff. It's good sand but just not name brand. HD and lowes used to carry southdown/old castle. Its sold for play sand but we use it in reef tanks.
