best place to buy fish locally?

I'm in monroe. Looking for a decent price and selection or at least can order within a reasonable time frame.

Exotic Fish and Corals in Milford is closest but I've had poor experiences with getting what I want in a timely manner.

Puppy Center is the best hands down but not that close.

yup. can't wait any longer. i ordered some dry sand there 3 weeks ago. forget it.
I was looking at puppy center. may be worth the ride.

I ordered a Golden Moray from one of the employees, never heard from them after they took my information, two weeks later when I brought it up they looked at me like I had two heads. Puppy Center always gives me a heads up when what I want is in if I call or PM.

If you haven't been there I really recommend it. Their frag tank system is totally up/running now (really got hit after Irene) and worth checking out. Their softies for 35$ tank in the back is a real bargain.

I have no experience with special orders from Exotic but have had great experience with them on livestock. I've dealt mostly directly with Bob. He always seems quite knowledgeable everything he has for sale and is great on working reasonable prices on things. I can't really speak for the employees as I haven't dealt with them much.

Main thing is to always do your research. You can get good deals online also if you're buying a good amount of stuff (which doesn't really take much in this hobby!).

Sorry. This post us too late. But IMO in the area the best find prices are st Greenwich Aquaria, hands down.

Goog health. Stand by product. And less than fish plus shipping cost of online vendors.

Definitely agree on Greenwich Aquaria. Solid stuff! They always have some really cool fish on offer and plenty of coral. Their big display tank is also worth the trip - my favorite is the gigantic ritteri in the back. See if you can find all the clowns!

Thanks guys. that's where we went. my wife and 7 month old chilled out on the couch for an hour or so. and i got to do my thing...spend money.
it was their spring sale.
got a clown, firefish and royal gramma. and a good start on my cuc.
it was slim pickin's as we hit the last day, sunday afternoon.
the gramma is in QT. after i got him home, he didn't look very good. he is only the size of the tip of my pinky. but the other 2 fish look good.
I still have a large green chromis in the sump for now. I'd like to add him back to the display but I'm afraid he'll be a bully. he's had the tank to himself for the past year.

Sorry about the slim pickings. Its usually great. Long way from Monroe.

What did you think otherwise?

pretty place. nice to see a fish store look that polished.
I had a very small gramma die on me. he was the only fish i put in QT. he was half the size of my pinky and the only one in the store. So now I have to go back next week and pick up a new one. which is fine since I need to get a cleaner shrimp.

what are you feeding your fish? the clown and fire fish will only eat frozen right now. I made some home made but my nutrient levels are spiking. any thoughts?

Funny, I reccomended the place based on fish selection and price. But now that you mention it, the only fish I ever bought there died - unaccountably - in two days. I wonder if they have a fish quality issue that I was not aware of. I may have made a bum reccomendation. If so, sorry. I'll have to watch for more people having such problems moving forward.

Any food's going to spike nutrients. Some more than others. Steve Russo found a great article on that here. It lists the nutrient loads on many common foods.

Personally I have no nutrient issues and feed Rods Food almost exclusively. Look it up. At the same time, I also feed very little.

I think Greenwich Aquaria is the nicest store around if you are willing to spend the money. I still have 4 of 6 fish I have gotten there and both losses happened within the first few days after introduction. They get tons of cool stuff in regularly.

I've been meaning to checkout Puppy Center sometime.

Well when I was there on Friday morning (1st Day of the sale) they were still unpacking the numerous bags / boxes from Quality Marine. So obviously some of the stuff they had, were not QT'd and straight from box to tank. Everything that I saw was pretty healthy and the selection was outstanding. As for the prices, when GA has a 30-50% off sale they are the best around. The Bellus Angel I got there is doing great.

Yeah, I should have known going the last day at 3pm, that it was slim picking.
The clown is doing very well, but it now looks like the filefish has something going on.
I'm not knocking the place at all. But poor planning on my part.
There is no way my wife would let me set up a qt tank. My display is only 20 gallons. So this is the chance I take.
I've never had good luck with fish. And to be honest, I hate dealing with this every time. I end up killing every fishin the tank because I don't qt.
I would expect the same outcome this time too.
Frustrating.

I would start to look at your processes, test your tank and equipment. Losing fish is not that easy to do unless there is a water quality issue... However, sounds like you just setup a QT... maybe that's the issue? The QT maybe going through a cycle?

GA is the best place in CT IMHO. Top quality stock for corals and fish at a highend cost though...

EF&C is good also, I have had the very same issues with ordering from them though... They take down my name, number, we will call you when its in... I called a few times to ask, oh that shipment was delayed etc.... never get a call back, then you go in and ask about it, suddenly I have three heads.... :hmm4:

Yeah that's why I went to Greenwich. On a side note I have confirmed the fire fish has some parasites that I can see moving on its body.
He is eating well and active, but alas no room for a qt.
My wife looked at me with that stare, when I said I have to set up a qt tank on the kitchen table for 2 months.
All this because she wanted a few fish for my 7 month old son to look at.
Again, it's my fault for not qt the fish from the start.

I would assume the parasite will consume the fish eventually and they will die.

I can keep healthy fish just fine. My sole green chromis who survived both of last years week long blackouts is still doing well. Hangin in the sump, but won't he pick up the parasite too now?

What kind of parasite? What does it look like?

I'd call GA to discuss it. It sounds like you may have a credit coming.

You need to I'D that parasite ASAP. And if the fish is in the DT, get it out ASAP.

So, in order of importance...

1) Get the fish out of your DT
2) Call GA and discuss the situation, asking for a credit
3) I'D the parasite and begin treatment

Good luck.
