Best Pump for the Sump?

I'm looking for recommendations for a good quiet pump for the sump of a 55 gallon SH tank. Primary concerns are quiet running, low heat transferred to tank water and preferably under $200.


I am assuming that an external pump will add less heat to the water. Is this always the case?

I've never used an external pump, will it be alot noisier run externally as opposed to being under water?

What else will you be running inline with the pump (chiller, UV, wavemaker, etc)? Personally, for a 55 gal, I'd go with the 1260, as 320 gph is pretty anemic. Your plumbing scheme will also have an effect on the "effective" flow of your system.

For reference, I was running a Mag 7 on the mains and a Mag 5 on the CL of our 50 gal pent. SH setup when I had it up and running. The CL was switched with a SCWD.

I've never personally run an Eheim (I actually prefer externals for most applications these days), but I know several very sharp peeps who run them and love them. They report SUPER quiet operation and great reliability.

Don't be afraid of a bit of flow in your setup...SH can tolerate it much better than was once thought. It simply requires a bit of planning as to how the flow is implemented.

Hmmmn, perhaps I am reading outdated material. I was aiming for 5x turnover per hour. There will be nothing inline with the return and it will be a straight shot up the back of the tank except for the bend for the spraybar.

I'm not opposed to going with higher flow, I am pretty creative and handy and could easily break it up around the tank. I'm just trying not to add uneccessary heat to the tank by running something bigger if I don't actually need bigger.

I only get 2 warm months here and I'd rather run AC in the room for 2 months than spend gobs of money on a chiller that I will only need for about 8 weeks out of the year. if I used a chiller, then I could just choose any pump and not worry about the heat issue. I am hoping to avoid it tho :beachbum:

I had not realized that the Eheim is not self priming. I am guessing that would mean that I need to put it in the sump, otherwise if I lose power while away from home, it will not come back on by itself? Not sure. Maybe it just needs to be located lower than the sump so that gravity will prime it?

Anyway, I am open to suggestions. Nothing is cast in stone here.

The Mag series looks good, and alot cheaper. I had read a post by someone who said they add more heat than the Eheim....no clue if it's true. It was only one post out of many. I'm just a clueless Sh noob myself :wildone:
