Best QT option for Achilles tang

Is the AT harder to keep than a PB? I saw your tank on YouTube it's very very nice! I see you have (2) AT and at least (1) PB. Also how far are you from COPART SALVAGE YARD? I use to go there once a week to buy salvage motorcycles

Thanks, I've never heard of the place.

You're from the B.R area?

AT probably ranks near the top on the difficult to keep fish list. They can be really finicky eaters. AT are just very ich sensitive fish and once they do come down with it, they get it real bad and often times proliferate it in the tank and wiping out nearly the whole tank in the process. I know a few locals that wiped out nearly their entire tank trying to keep an AT by adding it without QT.

PBT are easier, IMO.

Just watched your video again more. & more amazing! Im from Jackson Mississippi area! Crystal springs! Out side of Jackson! Took me about 1:45 min to get to COPART it's a national salvage insurance place to bid on vehicles! It's in a rural area of B.R. I will have my First AT before noon tomorrow ! I hope I get a healthy one and have good luck with it! LA ships out nice fish! And they package very well! I have been wanting one for a long time just was never sure! But I will leave him in QT for about 6 to 8 weeks! At that price I have to try one! I'm still confused on one thing! If he comes in healthy and eats good keeps eating good do I start off with cooper? Or use it on first signs? I have good luck with BW garlic & selcon & zoecon to start them off with and keep them healthy! But I want to start off right with this AT

It depends on what kind of DT you are running. If its a no ich tolerance tank, then it would be a good idea to copper the AT. If you plan on adding fish all the time, and not QT them at all, then just feed it well for a while and add it.

Before any treatment, see how the fish responds to food for a few days first. Then start with a treatment of prazipro, and then if you wish, copper later.

I got mine for 120 local so it was a good deal. He's eating like a pig with the rest of the big boys right now.

+1 they are also easily stressed, just put mine in the 75g QT and he is hiding in the PVC and when I feed he won't eat if I'm next to the tank, if I walk away he comes right out and eats. Guess he didnt like me taking him out of his home for the past two weeks!

Dmorty: hang in there sounds like your doing good! I would just stay away from tank all day maybe want be so stressed! But I'm sure not a expert! I been asking info on AT more than anyone! But after 2 weeks you sure don't want a crash! I think he will be fine! I'm sitting here waiting on FedEx now! My AT should arrive any time now! Last nite was like trying to sleep waiting up on SANTA! :) keep us posted on your AT! Love to hear your updates!

Just got my new friend! MR AT came in looking great! So glad LA sends healthy fish! Will check back later with updates when he is completely into swimming stage!

That's great to hear. Gotta give props to the folks at Quality Marine in Socal too..

Ok in the QT swimming very little grazing all over the bottom of tank (bare bottom) feed my other fish kept a little for him soaked in garlic & selcon ate like a little champ! Don't seem to be shy at all at this time! No lights on but has lighting from the room! Will see how he does thru the day! I will check back on him in a couple of hours! Had rather let him be for now! My first AT some I'm trying to make this work! Wish me luck! I do use Startsmart complete in all my tanks weekly! Also use I drop of garlic per 10 gallons 2 times a week! Not saying I'm right but I have not lost a fish in over 2 years! If I can keep this AT going as good as my PB I will be very happy! Thanks also to everyone on RC I have met some really nice and helpfull people! Thanks agin to all.

Coral lagoon: does LA get there stock from quality marine? If so I did not know that! So if that's the case. Thanks to quality marine! All I can say is from start to finish the fish that LA has are the healthiest stock & great coustomer service! That's just MPO! But I only been in this hobby off and on about 6 years! So I still got lots to learn and lov to hear how other people do & keep there stock! I have had horses for years & they all different some get alone some dont! Then you can bring a new horse in and they might all get alone then bring in another and you got war! Just saying just depends on the animals! Nothing is set in stone when it has a mind of its on! That I have learned! Anyways just check on Alvin (AT) he is doing great! Still not shy at all I'm very pleased so far!

Yeah I didn't know that in the beginning too. Thought they had another facility in CA. Then found out that all of their "CA" stuff comes from Quality Marine, and their only facility is Diver's Den in Wisconsin. It would be cool if Kevin/Live Aquaria did open up a small facility here on the West Coast though..

Dmorty: fed him twice today small amounts ate like a champ! I did use garlic & selcon for soaking food in! So far so good. But had him 15 hours! My first AT so I'm getting all the advice I can! And thank you for your advice with your AT! It really helps to hear what others have done with there new AT. I'm still happy!

I think I got mine from DD a few days before you did. They must've gotten a whole slew of them in at once, because there was another today on there.

Mine is eating .. well.. everything. I have a wide variety of food and so far there's not one thing I've given him that he hasn't devoured.

I guess they come pretty well "pre-trained" from DD.

Hey dmorthy....are you planning on using medications in your 75 gallon and how long you plan to have him in there? Mine has been through 3 weeks of qt and I think I'm ready to have him in my display but not sure??? Ive been using display water since day 1 with no meds. I know my display has ick occasionally but mt AT has been spotless from day 1. Hope its immunity...anyhow...ive had tangs on and off for the past 5 yrs and my experience is that if they past 3 weeks of qt with no meds then...he/she is good to go....but ive yet to have a AT in the past...hunnnn...just not sure now...:headwally:

I feel that i proactively treatfor ich so it doesnt show up in my dt. I am letting my display fallow for 12 weeks to be double sure and treating my achilles fir the duration in qt of 12 weeks.

Reef80: I have had ich before also years ago in my DT tank never used any meds just like yours would come and go! But ich always there the fish just kinda get immune to it! I hate to say this and hope I'm wrong but if you put that AT in that tank ich will eat him up! Anytime you add a new fish to a tank that has had ich for that long it seems to attack new fish! Please don't take what I'm saying wrong! Heck I hope I'm wrong but what I have seen in my tank is ich attach new fish! Maybe someone can tell you different! I'm by far no expert! See all my post all about just the AT! Good luck and let us know!
