I think Nickelback should be an option for best rock, because it would be interesting to see who the sadomasochists are, but from the available options I chose Pukani because of the porosity.

100% Pukani. Cure it outside of the tank and export the phosphates, if you have a lot then use LaCl but do the research. Here are a few variations I have had in my display. Note in the 3rd pick without much livestock that a lot of the rocks have natural overhangs. This is after I cut the bottoms of the rocks flat with a hacksaw. In the 3rd pic 7 rocks makes up the entire left structure.

8x3x2 360gal tank.

best dry rock.. No phosphates/super clean,etc...
http://www.reefrocks.net/
I tried to order this last summer. I'm not sure what the deal was but I was redirected to reefcleaners and was given the 50lb/$85. Reef cleaners rock is nice and porous and I got a few pieces that I specially requested. I can't say enough good things.

My avatar has pukani, fiji, and tonga branch rock. All dry. If I did it again I would drop the pukani. It's just way too delicate. All rock came from BRS.

I just ordered 100 lbs from ReefRocks.net. Second time I've ordered from the site and I've been happy both times. I had to pay with a personal check because the site doesn't let you pay with PayPal. When the rock arrived, the shipping label said ReefCleaners.

I really think live rock is the way to go..I have done both and the dry rock takes forever to purple up. Plus it lacks diversity. I would go with Tampa Bay saltwater

I've only ever had my one tank that I started a year ago, but really enjoyed my Tampa Bay Saltwater (TBS) rock and sand. I think it looks much more natural than dry rock and bagged sand. I've seen plenty of beautifully aquascaped tanks with great corals that started with dry rock, and they always look less "natural." But yes, you do avoid the potential for some unwanted hitchhikers.

TBS rock will come with gorilla crabs that you should trap and remove, but it also comes with loads of awesome porcelain crabs, pistol shrimps, urchins and other shrimp.

Here's an old photo of my tank (not great; as I was slow to add corals):

Im having a really hard time deciding between Pukani and Marco. I like the porosity and price that comes with the Pukani but I also like the overall solid look of the marco rock.
Another big plus for Pukani is being able to chisel and cut it. I would love to use TBS, however I really do not want to risk the pests that come with it.

Lets see some more pictures!

I just ordered some live rock from ARC. Everything I've read about it sounds great. Guess I'll find out soon enough.

I went with Pukani in my recent tank and I can't really fathom anything better. It's super light, easy to work with, and just has amazing shapes. I ordered 60lbs for my 4x2 tank and only ended up using like 40. The downsides are just that you need to cure it because it has a lot of dead organic material, but so what? This hobby is all about patience!

I'm in the very early stages of thinking about getting into a new reef, and I'm leaning toward TBS as well. Did you have any problem with nasty critters or die-off? When I had a 55 "reef" tank back in the dark ages of the 1990s, I got a mantis shrimp in some live rock that I never could trap or get rid of, and he killed a number of fish.

I'm thinking some combination of Pukani and TBS might be the way to go from a reefscape/artistic perspective, with the benefit of the faster cycling time with the TBS rock.

As for live rock, I don't see Premium Aquatics mentioned anywhere here. They've been in the business for a long time and their live rock and sand is excellent as well. Plus, the owner is an awesome dude that is extremely accommodating.

Glad this thread was started. I started one yesterday on Reef Cleaners vs Marco...

I had two replies saying they couldn't grow coral one on reefcleaners but had it everywhere else in the tank.

Has anyone had this issue with either rocks discussed above ?

Disregard anything and everything these people have to say. Saying coral won't grow because of the type of rock it is attached to is a sure sign of not knowing what the heck they are talking about lol. :blown:
Looks like his phone auto corrected coralline to coral one. If the rock leaks phosphate then coralline won't grow on it.
