For a 55 I would go with the octopus extreme 160. Most skimmers mentioned have a largish footprint and wouldn't fit in your sump. What are the deminsions your skimmer needs to fit in your 55s sump?
I was going to suggest the MSX160, but it is a little over the $250 budget. I wouldn't say what fits or doesn't fit in a sump without knowing what the available space is.

I am breaking in a 160 for a friends 55g and all I have to say is this thing packs a punch for its package size. 8x10" footprint. Awesome for a 55g since they are only 12" front to back with the stands usually having about 8.5 - 9" front to back internal deminsions.
