best stores in Sacramento

Hands down...as of right now, i've got so say yourreef's (john) display tank is the best show of colorful corals in town. if you have a chance, get out there and see for yourself :D. i've never seen it poppin like it is right now.

I believe he just switched from 3 250s to 4 400s. At least when I was in there last week, he was in the process of this change. His display tank is more than mere words can describe.

I had another long rant written up, but decided just to delete it. Its not worth the effort of upsetting others.

To keep it simple:
1. I wish we were open with our opinions of what is responsible reefkeeping and what LFS share and support these opinions and which are not (whether knowingly or unknowingly). This is not something I can determine on my own by visiting an LFS, since I am a newbie and I am unaware of good/bad livestock and good/bad sources of livestock. I would be very upset if I learned I purchased a fish that was captured with cyanide poisoning or from a reef that has been overharvested and is supposed to be protected.
I just wish all livestock came listed with a legend like the Nugget in Roseville has for their fish market, noting where and how captured.

2. I wish there were representatives of the LFS on this board. Something bad must have happened to not have any on here or any that are willing to say they are an employee or owner.
How awesome would it be if the LFS listed their weekly livestock shipments on here for us?

I guess it stayed long....sorry.

Well,

I have sat on the sidelines for awhile now on this topic and agree with the people that say post the good and the bad, Why wouldnt you post bad experiences?

I have several threads i can get and show that some of these people that say be positive are throwing negative comments about stores around.

Here is one. Not too many nice things said and look who is saying them
http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1134039&highlight=aqualife

What i have seen of people and there bad experiences at LFS havn't even been that bad.

LOL..... good catch... sounds like some people here are hipocrits.... BTW I wish there were forums for city locals that everyone can post on.. that way i can talk to local reefers that are not so biased based on club discounts...

Easy asnwer, it's against the UA of this board. Even if they're sponsors of this site, they can not sell or advertise in the main forums, only their own sub forum. Any employee posting anything construed as advertising will get banned, and more then a few have gone down that road and not come back.

Funny how this thread appears several times a year on every club forum. It's not just your club that goes thru this, every club does just about.

The fact is, most clubs can not survive on dues along. You want raffles, fun events, etc, you have to respect the ones helping you. No respect, no love from them. Posting negatives on this forum will just lead to less sponsors for MARS, it's a fact. It sure would suck for MARS to loose sponsors over non members posting in their RC forum. WHile it's not a closed forum, it is seen as MARS forum to the sponsors and what goes on here 100% effects MARS.

Can we please not let this discourse devolve into an attack on our own? Funman is a great guy, a devoted hobbyist, and a club officer as well as. Ultimately, he's just trying to maintain the integrity of the club, and to uphold the mutually beneficial relationships WE have with local vendors. This is a good thing! And though I may not necessarily agree with his assertions regarding positive and negative comments, I cannot in good conscious stand by and watch him be attacked on a personal level. He's done more for the hobby on a local level than most anyone I can think of, and his generosity is well known and well founded. So please, let's back off of the name calling and finger pointing.

on a side note: I think this particular thread has definitely outlived it's usefulness and is just turning ugly...the concept behind a club is unity, not divisiveness...

1. Why would you assume that I was talking about Funman, I did not mention his name anywhere on the forums...

2. I was just concerned that no one would speak up if someone is irresponsible and/or conducting business with immoral practices.

3. Really the only post here with the negetive comment was the first one... everyone else chimed in with good experiences... I have not needed to post anything negetive about any LFS since they have treated me with respect and have good business practices.

I agree that funman is a great guy i see him giving more cheato away than anyone ever and i always see threads where he is helping people drill there thanks.

I in no way posted that link for him to get bashed.

I guess all in all we should just move forward and try and keep it positive and keep the negative aspect of it on PM's.

So, I'm done now! Think i will go to Your Reef and look at that display tank today:)

Well here goes a long post..
I hope someone will actually read it, rather than just scanning for disagreement points to bash on later in the replies below it!

First, Thanks Shiveley...

Second. muttley101, We all know who your comment was aimed at, were not blind, and we're not stupid. (So please don't treat us as such.)
HOWEVER,
Yes; I have not always have this philosophy and view. My views on this subject have changed VERY much in the last month or so..
You can thank our club PR person for brining this to my attention.

Third, There is nothing stopping people from posting negative things, There are no rules about it on RC or Club Rules that prohibit it.
This is a free and open forum, however you may notice that RC has designated it as the " Marine Aquarists Roundtable of Sacramento (MARS)" That means in my view, it somewhat belongs to the members of MARS.

Forth, kdblove_99, When CRS opened, there was a HUGE backlash here on this RC forum, because the owner had apparently done something "allegedly", and there were some major outspoken people here who were talking about boycotting the store before it even opened!!
I was the only person on opening day waiting at the door for it to open, I spent a good 2 hours there and not a single person, let alone club member came on that Sat to the grand openeing, I belive due in part to the HUGE negative posts here on RC about the owner.
I'm very glad the club was able to patch things up with CRS, and we now have a GREAT relationship with that LFS, and it is a GREAT LFS!

If left unchecked, a few people on RC would slowly destroy every positive contact we have as a club with our LFS's, Until the club was left with no LFS's that liked us, and even mentioning you were in the club would get you laughed at all the way out of the store! (YES, that happened recently at one of our LFS's to a member!!!) Is that what we all really want as a club?

Here's what it boils down to; negative posts big or small, can, will and do, explode into massive bashing on this forum. Always have always will, people take one small comment like "they shorted me $0.10 on change" and turn it into "The worst LFS anywhere!!! Don't shop there!!!)

What this means to the club....
Without LFS's on board and helping our club, here's what goes away..
1) Discounts that help us all afford this hobby.

2) Raffle Prizes that make the raffles fun, AND bring in money for the club to operate and throw parties like the garage sale with FREE FOOD AND DRINKS. If you think your small yearly membership fee covers ALL the stuff MARS does, THINK AGAIN!!!
You all saw what happened to the raffles when they had very little in them, they sucked, no one bought tickets, and as such the club lost money buying items for the small raffle that not even enough people bought into because it had nothing good, and we didn't even break-even on the small stuff we did buy.
So if LFS hate us we get; sucky descent raffles, new members that come to the meetings and don't have as much fun, and we lose money as a club, so it's a tripple whamy on the club.
(Bad raffles for paid members, less new members, and an operating loss.) How is that good for anyone?

3) Great speakers, yes some of our speakers are LFS owners or previous LFS owners. If we don't have good speakers or good raffles why would people come? Yes I know some just come to meet up, but that reason alone will not sustain a club our size for very long. I know I would only go to about 1/2 of the meetings if there was no raffle (To speak of) AND no speaker on a subject..
That's just me perhaps but, that's how I see that it works..

4) Connection to product vendors, The LFS can offer a lot when it comes to knowing who to contact at a particular manuf. (Bruce may not always be around for us :) )
So when the club wants to do a group buy or something it will be harder to hunt down contacts and get a good relationship with the people there. I'm sure if one of the larger stores told a manuf. "Hey so and so from MARS is looking to buy xxx can you help them out?" Will go a lot further than you just calling up the Manuf. and saying "What can you do for us?"

So to wrap things up; post what you want on here, there's no rules (Except RC's Rules)

But personally I don't want to be in a club that gets mocked when I go into LF Stores, a club that has sucky raffles, or has no discounts, or has lame (or worse) no speakers at all, every month, or a club that has no unity, or care about the places we buy our most prized possessions to satisfy our unexplainable desires to have the ocean in our homes.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So it's your club; not mine.
Do what you will with it,
but I feel that it's very delicate and if care is not taken it will not be around for all to enjoy. If there is no club to share corals with what have we done to help with conserving the reefs? How many trades would go on without the club at the center, matching people up with each other? I have to belive A LOT more of us would turn to LFSs to buy corals and fish that were NOT tank rasied, without this club.

This will / (Should) be my last post on this subject.
I have said my peace, flame away..(Hey it's your club do what you want.)

funman - you are definately one of the more passionate members here and always willing to help. good read.

if i were humble enough to think i had any influence on the subject, i'd just offer this observation - had we all just provided glee with some of our favorite stores to visit in the area (as the second poster did) this thread would be buried on page 5 by now.

just this past weekend i visited 5 sacramento area stores with a buddy and all but one seemed as though it lacked the flare i'm used too. maybe i endulge in fish porn to much, maybe all the good stuff was sold out, maybe the good stuff from wholesalers is limited right now. did i see zoanthids that looked terrible - yep. but there will be another day; and one of those days i'll walk out smiling from ear to ear with my latest catch!

by the way those stores were exotic, o'street, jo jo's, coral reef shop, and your reef. you can bet despite this weekend, i'd be the first to recommend each and every one of them. not so much because the store "wows" me every time, but because the staff (in all the stores) are always helpful and i appreciate what they do for our reefing community.

Heads up for anyone going fish storing this weekend. Exotic was unloading two big shipment of coral when I was there this evening. All their coral tanks are PACK with corals.

Ok now you are bashing me assuming I'm calling everyone stupid.... great whats next... is this what happens with people who have an opinion on here?

Well, I am amazed it took this long for a thread of this nature to start hurting peoples feelings. This is exactly why these sorts of threads are not a good idea.

(Funman, you're a great guy and I hope you didn't get too out of sorts about the posted thread and comments about it. As I interpreted the remark from mutley, it was aimed at you but also at several others as well and was more tounge in cheek than scathing. Besides, the thread was pretty strange to read.)

There are going to be good and bad experiences at any LFS. People should feel free to share those experiences. But in the words of Stan Lee, "With great power comes great responsibility."
Please understand that the LFS situation in Sacramento is unusual and we are lucky to have many good shops to choose from. We also currently get lots of support from them, so please try to post your positive and negative remarks in their proper context. Context makes all the difference in the world when understanding a situation. And it helps to identify when the postee is being unfair to the LFS or if the LFS was unfair to the postee. Either way it really just sounds petulant to post negative things anyways. Grown ups dont whine about how unfair things are, they deal with the situation then and there.

These sorts of threads usually devolve away from people complaining about something that upset them and end up with people arguing about something altogether different. All it takes is a single post to make enemies on the forum and often the post is not about the topic and the 'enemies' had nothing to do with the original issue. Besides, I think the community on this forum is pretty great. I would hate to see bickering ruin a good group of people

Actually muttley, your original comment directed at funman wasn't very fair. And it wasn't tounge in cheek at all. I would be offended if I was him, and you would have been offended as well.

I guess no matter what I say in this thread I will be accused and directed as being wrong....

So here it goes.... you're right, I'm wrong. I hope you get far in life with your mistaken certainties.

Good luck with your fish and corals..... I'm done with this thread..

My opinion was surgically removed on my wedding night, I just say I'm sorry all day now. All this posting and I'm still confused, just do like all my kids and blame ME. Have a clear water day !

I think the best way to do that is to be honest and open about the good and the bad. Not selling out to who ever is giving you hand outs that week. The true value in a club should be the spread of information, not what can I take home for free if I go to the next meeting. At the same time I also believe that if you have nothing good to say you should keep your mouth shut. People should be free to tell it like it is. But be mature, objective and not just bash. And realize that ALL store have their good and bad days just like us.

After all this, which store is the best in Sacramento?

I would say jojo's if your in the sacramento area. I dont go there as often as the other stores in sac, i dont know why though. probably because i get my free DI water at exotic and i have shopped there (exotic) since they were on florin rd by the wall mart. Jojo's has very nice and rare corals for very cheap. They have a very large 8-12-15-20 dollar frag sections. Also have a section for more rare zoas like watermellons, bambam orange, rainbows, ext, for around 15-20 bucks. There fish are as numerous as most stores, but are far better in shape and quality. I have never seen a dead or "sickly" looking fish. Costomer service is good, just the way i like it. They ask you if they can help you, if you say no just looking, they will leave you alone until you ask them for assistance. I dont like to be rushed or pressured, i like to parooze the store :D. I dont need the employees favorites, or what HE/SHE would buy, im all for oppinions, but when i ASK for them. When im ready to get a piece or checkout, they will give you whatever info you need, but when YOUR ready. Overall, great store. I should go there more often
