Best tank store

Hey locals,

I'm looking to buy a new tank, 150 or bigger and I'm wondering what stores around carry good brands or make/drill well?

The seahorse and slippery rock closed since I left so where are the good stores? I'm not worried about livestock, just good stores for a tank and drilling it and the longevity of the tank.

I might also be interested in a used tank 150 or bigger. I'm looking to keep this tank 10+ years so it really would need to be in tip top shape I don't want leaks down the road

Reef Gallery, was going to drill my tank, but I did it myself. Really easy.

I doubt that any store is going to carry a tank that big, and I f they do it going to cost a fortune, simply because of the real estate it's going to take up. Why not just order one online?

I'm scared to drill my own lol

I got a quote from one store for 1200 reef ready. But Idk if that is a good price or not. I do think I want to get mine back center drilled though
 
My plan is a 220 with a sump and refugium. It will probably be a fowlr with inverts. I plan on having a few coral eaters.

I can't decide on internal or external box overflow but I am thinking of center drilling as long as I can get a thin width box with enough flow for a tank this size.

I know nothing about bean animal, I did have a tank with an internal center drilled box and I loved it

I will probably use a 125 as a sump/refugium if I can fit it in the stand. 3 chambers. I may try not to use a skimmer and use more macro and water changes more often. I like a "dirty" setup. It is just my personal opinion that I would have more pods and things this way, and I plan on having pod eating fish. If I run into detritis issues I may rethink it. But I'm probably going to use mangrove, chaeto, and have some nice plants Nd macro in the display such as shaving brush plant

I will have more ideas and a more solid plan once I get the tank and a stand. I'm probably going to go with marineland because I don't know any manufactures and I'd be worried about not only the expense of shipping but also if it arrives cracked.. so I'll probably buy local

Went down to aquaworld for the first time today have to say great store and great staff

If I buy a marineland I can't get the overflow how I want so I really am looking for recommendations on any affordable custom tank builders

Miracles quoted me at 3000 shipped to a local depot which is more than I want to pay. And great lakes aquarium has the tank with starphire for 1200 but doesn't do coast to coast.

So I'm in a bit of a pickle, I'm going to get some quotes and of they all are around 3000 I might just have do the cheaper option. If anyone recommends a tank builder, or of you know how to cut glass on an already built tank let me know. (Not drill holes, but cut out 1/4" or more from the top of the back for an overflow box)

Yep same here, I am trying to get SCA to change how they eurobrace= 1 inch below the top of the tank , so add that to the thickness of the brace and your overflow is 2 inches from the top of the tank. And that is if you make your own smooth overflow.
 
OK- heard back from Steve over at SCA- yes- they are willing to move the position of the Eurobrace to the top of the tank. They will also take out there stock middle tower overflow and seal the three holes in the bottom of the tank by putting a 12 mm glass piece over them and siliconing it to the bottom of the tank. You wont see this, if you put any substrate down on the bottom of the tank. They will also drill the back of the tank to your specs. I am awaiting the time frame and costs of the modifications before I make my final order.

What does sca stand for? Excuse my ignorance.

Do they sell any undrilled tanks? Having holes sealed worries me long term.. I plan on keeping this tank lifetime unless I hit tho lotto and upgrade lol
 
Well SCA I think means southern California aquariums. From what I have read the covered holes with a piece of glass is extremely safe. Remember all the weight if the water is pressing on the glass. I would think that area is actually stronger than any corner area seam. But ,yes I do believe u can do a special order with no holes in bottom.

Great point didn't think of that. I agree. I'll look into them

Heard back from a couple builders but they don't do external overflow grr
 
I don't think you will find a manufacturer to actually make and install the type of overflow you are trying to achieve. If you want to do an internal/external overflow setup similar to what I am looking for = with a minimal footprint on the inside of the tank , but with maximum surface skimming then you will be doing some legwork and self designing and installing - like I am. I have determined I may have to build the internal coast to coast out of 1/4 inch thick glass myself. Then purchase an Acrylic external box with 3 holes in the bottom of it ready for Bean animal plumbing/drains. Then drill the external overflow box myself to match up with the holes drilled in the rear of the tank by the manufacturer.

Aqua world said they could do an internal box with external bean animal but I want the entire thing external.

I've already talked to a few builders now and some don't do external flows and one was just to expensive so If I have to jump through hoops of fire I might just get a 220 reef ready and call it a day.

To me it seems simple. Cut 1/4" off the top all along the back. Glue on a really long overflow box. Drill a few holes in it. Maybe it's more work than I think, I don't know.



If it wasn't a 220 build I'd try a diy tank but 220 is a lot of water.

We will see what other builders Say. Hopefully good news tomorrow

You have to do some sort ofor smaller internal box with a weir, unless you have a way to cut the interior glass the length desired to have the water flow to the external overflow. With a glass tank that would be near impossible, but possibly doable with a acrylic.

Why impossible with glass?
