Best thing besides an Anemone

Hey. What is the best coral to get, in it's hardiness, easiness, etc., to get, instead of an anemone? I'm leaning towards a nice piece of Hammer Coral, but what do you guys think?

What kind of clown are you talking about? I bet a bunch of hairy mushrooms could handle the love of a clown better than hammer coral. If you decide on hammer coral get a big one..like one 3x the size of your clown. Quite a bit of people say don't let your clowns use corals as a host. Because they will love the coral to death. Clowns and toadstool leathers look great together. Then again, you could possibly end up with clowns that won't use any coral or anemone as a host like mine. My pair of ocellaris prefers the sand or a rock.

not to mention leathers will eat fish, clown or not. i would go with hairy mushrooms because my clowns almost killed my torch before they moved on to the anemone

Just try stuff that is fleshy and wavy.........I have seen clowns host in shrooms, zoas, leathers, LPS, calerpa, hair algae, a feather duster, and even a clam..........then there were other clowns that just liked a clay pot........clarkii, tomatoes, and maroons are more likely to host in anything.........ocellaris and skunks are less likely

But then the hairy mushrooms will take over. My Maroon has killed every coral I have except the hairy mushrooms and a cabbage leather. Ugh.

Hairy mushrooms tend not to be fast growers/splitter and will rarely take over a tank, or even a large area. Give it a try with a rock that has 8-12 and you can remove it if you don't like the results or outcome.

I have a large frogspawn that my oc clowns host in. Does not seem to bother the coral at all.

Well mine don't know that. I kalk and siphon them when I do water changes. I wouldn't wish them on anyone.

Hammers, froggies, and the big toadstools. Xenia seems to be a favorite too and can be taken to the LFS for credit fairly often.

I have a Clarki who has started hosting in my Alveopora. He gets frustrated at night when the Alveopora retracts after the lights go out and he can't go to bed

Hairy Mushrooms are known to be clownfish predators.

What? I know a giant cup mushroom will eat clownfish, baby sharks and any fish it can get ahold of. I haven't heard of little hairy mushrooms eating clownfish. That is new
