better HO skimmer: Typhoon or Remora?

honestly, if you havent looked into the CPR aeroforce 1 and 2 line then i would do so. ive had mine running hand on, and modified to be in my sump. the total gallonage is approx. 65 and a heavy bioload. hope this helps.

I voted for the Remora because I had the Typhoon and it was a waste of money. If you got it to skim at all it was just a little musty smelling water that was slightly yellow. Spend the money and get a real skimmer.

well I have both. I currently use the typhoon, have for almost 5 years. Recently acquired the remora on the cheap. I get my typhoon to work great cause I have a air pump hooked up to the air line. It is an easy mod. But it only seems to work well for a couple weeks at a time. The venturi gets dirty or clogged or something, and I have to break the whole thing down and clean. Im tired of that. So in short, I get good results from the typhoon, but sick of the constant maintenence. I was hoping the Remora would be less maintenence all the time.
Try it out yourself and see what *you* think. Doesn't really matter what others think.
I love mine... nothing to fuss with, nothing to clog up and overflow, nothing really to maintain. But then, I have a pretty low bioload and keep up on my water changes - so I'm not asking a ton from my skimmer.

WOW!!!! A positive about the Remora!! Didnt think I would see that. How high do you keep your cup? Where abouts do you keep the O ring? Any pics? Thanks bro
Well... let's put it this way - I've never used anything else on my tank. I'm a 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' type of guy, and I've never had any issues with my tank when it comes to water quality. So it works for me. Your mileage may vary.
Cup height varies. Right after an injector cleaning it's about mid-height and gets progressively lower until I get around to cleaning out the injector. But again... it all depends on your setup and your bioload.
At least you understand the cup gets adjusted up and down. Can't tell you how many folks I've helped out with the Remora that don't even understand that you need to adjust the cup up or down to vary the amount of skimmate. :hmm3:

Do you have the regular cup or drain line cup on yours? Which is a better option?
Regular cup on mine. As far as which is better, I suppose it all depends on your situation. If you don't ever intend to empty your collection cup or are away for long periods of time with no one paying attention to your tank, then I suppose the cup with the drain line installed would be a good idea. I've had several times when the skimmer has gone a bit crazy and filled up the collection cup to the top. But then it just drains back into the skimmer and only a little foam bubbles out from around the cover. It's really hard to overflow the thing.

I love my Remora. I have never had any problems with it and I am also impressed by it's performance even with a low bio load. I would suggest the pre skimmer. However, beware that the box is larger than it appears. I would measure things out to make sure you have enough room in your current setup.

As far as that preskimmer box, I had one and sold it. It was just too freaking big. Bad enough having a Mag3 in the tank, but having it encased by that box made it worse. And the way it attaches to the pump is pretty sketchy, in my opinion. The advantage of the box though is that it will draw water from the surface of the tank, versus 6-8" under the surface, and keep any funky surface scum away. But you can to the same think with some DIY thinking and one of those surface skimmer attachments meant for cannister filters plumbed into the intake of your skimmer pump.. Just Google "tom aquatics surface skimmer" and you'll see what I mean.
