Beyond the Reef Don't do it!!!

I dealt with Jeff all the time and really never had any problem. I think the problem that most people see now are from the newer employees who runs the business. It's an unfortunate, that some businesses go this route and end up weakening the customer relationship.

Finally, there is some one else that realizes just how bad of a store Beyond Belief is. I have been holding my grudge against them for over 2 years.

I know that they are CMAS supporters but if it were me I would let them know that CMAS no longer wants the support of a LFS that treats their customers the way they do but since I am not a CMAS member my thoughts and words mean nothing. Maybe a CMAS member could bring this up at their next meeting so that the officers can act upon the treachery of Beyond Belief.

Just to answer a few questions that were asked in a couple posts. I bought the conch about 2 weeks ago. I still had the receipt and yes at the time of purchase I asked 3 times are you sure that is a fighting conch??? And I was assured that it was. I had some doubt due to shell shape. But after being absolutely assured that it was a fighting conch I decided they must me right and the other pics of stuff I had seen of them might not have been good representations. The conch was something like $15 after tax. And no it is not the money it is the way in which I was treated and yes I was a very regular customer and had been for the past year and half due to the fact that I pass it everyday on my way to work. This was also not an isolated event either. I bought a cleaner shrimp from them about 3 weeks ago as well and the cleaner died in the first 2 hours of being in the tank. So I called them and they didn't want to replace it. Now the cleaners there are around $30 and it had been less then 2 hours. Eventually they agreed to replace it but that is just one other instance of bad customer service.

Also i think one of the other main reasons that aquatic guru says he will not go there again is because we know each other so it is not just a random post.

they sound like they don't understand business
keeping a customer is supposedly 3 to 7 times cheaper
than attracting new ones

they must not like money

Unfortunately the list of places that I refuse to shop at is much longer than the places I will buy from. I haven't been to Beyond Belief for a couple of years. Obviously things have not changed for the better. If it were not for Jim at Coral Paradise and Dave at Ocean's Floor, I might not ever support LFS. Those guys know customer service and satisfaction keep them in business.

What happened to "The customer's always right"?

For the most part it has been thrown out the window. Now on the other hand, those who believe in customer service do leaps and bound over other businesses no matter what business they are in.

FYI, I stopped 'shopping' Beyond Belief as well, a couple years ago. I used to go there from time to time when doing my 'fish rounds' but stopped. There prices always seemed high to me and service wasn't always up to par.

*shrugs*

Just seemed like there were many better places to shop.

I am probably stepping on toes here and I mean no offense ... I just enjoy lively debate.

Aquatic Guru: In your post you say that you bought a fish from them. Put it in your tank and, because the ecosystem you created was poisonous to the fish, it died. In my opinion, it was generous of them to offer you a discount on a later purchase. Think about it this way ... If you went to nordsroms and bought a cashmere sweater, took it home, and put it in your washing machine and dryer and it came out ruined there is no way in the world they would replace it.

Yea your right. My toes are just fine. Didn't hurt at all. Still, I haven't been there for a couple months and will still continue to not show up. They need more frags like Ocean's Floor, Corals Paradise and Aquatic Reef. Hey Beyond Belief, if your reading this, go shop around other stores and look at the prices of other LFS, DROP THOSE PRICES!! YOUR NOT FOOLING ANYONE!

I think that even at their extorted prices, many of us experienced hobbiests would still shop there if they weren't such ***holes.

I moved from Rolling Meadows to FL a few years ago, and checked out Beyond the Reef a few times.......

A few weeks ago I noticed an Aquarium Adventure right around the corner from it while driving by on my way to a wedding....I was surprised to see them so close together. Is there lots of competition between the 2? The Aquarium Adventure in Ohio is pretty over priced....

Mainly just curious, as I'm not up there as much as I'd like.

I don't think Aquarium Adventure is affecting Beyond the Reef too much, but I'm pretty sure it's affecting Petco across the street. If I was into Freshwater like I used to be, I would shop at Aquarium Adventure. Price on Saltwater livestock at Aquarium Adventure is high also compared to other LFS. I don't know about freshwater cause I never look at it.

Hey whats up Mo.

I think you are right about AA but they do have a really nice FW section I got a really good sized albino tiger oscar there about a month ago and I had a 40% off coupon, so I got him for like $30.

And yes puffer the customer should be right unless they are way whacked out and off the rocker so to speak but with places like Beyond Belief, the customer is always wrong! There are some good stores out there after the debacle with BTR I called Glenn over at Advanced and he said sure bring in the conch and I will give you some snails or something for it. So I bagged it up and took it over there and he gave me 3 turbos for it and a discount on 3 astreas. All in all I got the 3 turbos and the 3 astreas for $3 and the conch. Not a bad deal at all.

I guess I'm just lucky.

I bought a 58 oceanic and canopy from Beyond the Reef, the best price around by the way. I took my time and set up the tank and didn't open the canopy for a good month. When I did open it, I found it was damaged. I went in and talked to them and they ordered me a new one and exchanged the damaged one without any fuss, what so ever. They were well within their rights to say no, but they took care of me instead. That's what I call customer service.

I don't think the price of their livestock is cheap but they're in the ball park with the rest of the stores and cheaper than advanced aquatics. Nothing against Glen.

I found them to be stand up people and I will continue to shop there.

Well Flap I guess you are one of the lucky ones then cause I have talked to a lot people and from me experience I will never shop there again!!! They treat most people like **** and I don't want to do business with a place like that. You must have caught the guy on a day when he was high or just got lucky cause they don't treat most people like that!

The canopy and the live stock are two diferant situations. My guess is with the canopy BTR has recourse with the manufacture. Live stock they don't. I'm guessing the canopy went back to who ever built it and that is why it was no problem.

With the live stock the customer has recourse as well. Don't go back. But my guess is that they are to ignorant and arrogant to care.

I have to chime in. You people are killing me here.

I have been going to Beyond the Reef for years and I still like the store. I started out buying water and have been being stuff from them for a while. I like the fact they they keep clean tanks. I typically test the water in the bag from the store and they do a great job of keeping healthy tanks.

Getting good employees is tough for any small business owner.
Getting good employees that know something about reefing is astronomically harder to do. I am sure most of your have found that the stores that have the best customer service are typically small places that are run by their owners. Just like you would run a store if you owned it!

Jeff and Dorothy sound like they are at a different time in their lives. They probably do not want to work 16 hours a day anymore and I don;t blame them. By hiring someone to run the store, they can now start to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Yes....They may lose a few clients, and maybe upset a few along the way, but what they get in return may be worth the cost to them.

You can choose to purchase your livestock from anyone. If you need that warm and fuzzy feeling when you walk into the store, then find a store that will provide this to you. For me, convenience is most important. I could care less if the employees even spoke English. I typically do not listen to them anyway. I will not drive out of my way to buy something from a store just because they are nicer.

Geez you guys. You make it sound like the store owner needs to kiss your feet when you walk in.
