Bio balls are out, dsb or plenum??

hello again,

im coming back to the hobby and are quickly getting up to speed.
i have built a sump which utilises bio balls.
i think im going to start again and design a sump with a plenum but what are you guys using dsb or plenum.?

I believe when you run a DSB it work the same as w/ a plenum. Making an anarobic area.

Someone much smarter than me should chime in.
 
I rely on live rock for denitrification and use refugia connected to the sump with gracilleria and chaetomorpha mcroalgae.
 
DSB, if maintained properly is a tried and true method. I use it in combination with macro algae and a skimmer. Those, IMHO, are the 3 most efficient forms for filtration. Carbon is nice too. Go with a nice fine sand and about 6" deep. You can read all about them in RK mag. Good info here to get you up-to-date. Good Luck.
 
I ran a plennum for 12 years. Just tore down the tank because the last two years it has not looked as good as I would like. In the plennum much of the sand became fused together. I will not be doing a plennum again. Tank looked qreat for 10 years though.
