Bio Cube Owner's Thread

I've decided to go with the MH over the LED, and I really like the 16.5" sunpod by current USA. But, i don't know where to find one online. Has anybody got a site where I can buy one? And some information on that fixture or any other metal halide fixtures would be great.

R Jay- I checked out the viper k-2 and it's pretty cool, I'd just rather have a fixture rather than a hang on. But it is pretty cheap and great, definitely my plan B.

I too looked for a sunpod, contacted current usa and was told they stopped manufacturing them. apparently they are focusing on led's and t5's now. i hope to see your tank when you get the light on it!

I had a buddy bend me some pipe to hang my light. The legs it comes with are kind of cheap. The setup also comes with a hanging kit, but I didn't want to use that either.

R Jay- that's what i figured happened. But it is so annoying that i can still find tons of 20" and up sunpods in online stores, but none of the 16.5.

SurfnFish- Your tank looks great, and that fixture is way cheaper than i thought it would be. I'm liking it a lot. I like the black occy pair. I had some grade B picassos in mine, but then the heater and pump failed simultaneously, and one died. I've got the whole tank drained out, just sand in it, and am going to be starting over from scratch once i pick out a light (i was going to let it cycle while it shipped)

Well they still look good in that tank!

I'm updating for ya'll. I just got back from the LFS and was talking with the owner. They had one of the 16.5 sunpods, but it was on a bc14 that they're selling as a kit because they made a few mods. I decided to go with a clip on to make light acclimation easier (transfering everything from my 50g to the bc14). I purchased the coralife metal halide fixture, and it'll be arriving on tuesday. So i'm going to start a build thread, and put in the rock and water tonight or tomorrow and begin my cycle.

wow, looks great! thanks for the pictures, your 20k looks like my 14k, lol I wanted a LIGHT blue but the bulb manufacturers are all different on their lights, got to find the perfect bulb... when I come to the 12 month mark of course.

What's everybody using for auto-top offs?

I want to put one in my bc14 to make it more of a complete and stable system.

I started my build thread:

SurfnFish-
I read in an older thread that you had a Nem in your bc14, have you still got him in there? Or, when you did, how'd it work out?

I got rid of it. It got to big and I have quite a few corals. I was just simply running out of room. It did great the whole time it was in there though. Never seemed unhappy. Always bubbled up and had great color.

My A** Turned my lights out tonight...An hour later grabbed my flashlight out to peep and found one of my emeralds tearing a chunk out of my duncan.... I got so mad that he took a ride down the porcelain highway. Good by and good riddance. Not to mention lost two clowns to ICK. My falmeback and sixline are at the LFS in quarantine. A very bad week for my 29g.

Lol... love it Rob... I just started following this thread as I just bought a 14g BC... downsizing my 44g main tank... but anywho... Yeah I know they "say" emeralds are reef safe but the one I had in my 44g was wiping out my Xenia (which to some is no big loss) but I love the stuff. We caught him picking at it... he would grab claws full and start munching... others kept telling me oh no he is just picking food from around blah blah blah... well he wiped out a who colony of it in a month or so.. I put him in my daughters AP12 that I was setting up and he croaked... I felt badly BUT a month after his demise my Xenia is coming back full force so all's well that ends well....

14G Biocube DSB

14G Biocube DSB

I've just set up a 14G biocube with the idea that chamber 2 can be used as a "DSB", or more accurately anaerobic bacteria filter used to break down nitrate into gas. Basically I just filled the chamber with 3-4mm crushed coral and will post results after I see an ammonia spike. I've run large SPS tanks in the past based on two premises: 1) nitrates never need to be tested 2) calcium, ph and evaporation are maintained with a kalkwasser drip. I call this my "theres only so much time and effort I'm willing to expend theory which worked great for years with amazing results growing montes and acros.

Kind Regards
