BioPellets

nope not with the snails. though ive had snails do that before biopellets just fall off glass or rock and not right themselves and die for no apparent reason. possibly starvation, change in salinity too drastic, tempature to high or fluctuates to rapidly.

+1

I haven't noticed them do it any more frequesntly since starting the biopellets.

Starvation, or too high of salinity, and especially too high of magnesium will do that to snails.

sonna...... it appears like the hair algae is coming back, thats what i get for spoiling my fish again with the frozen foods.....

Do you rinse your frozen foods if possible? When frozen, I also usually feed about 1/3 of a cube. Too much otherwise.

I like feeding frozen foods to, But i don't understand the rinse?

I cut up the sally's mysis shrimp cube into quarters and then defrost that quarter peice into some system water in a coffee cup and use a baby medicine dropper to squirt it into the tank.

I also get hair algae on the rocks & sand bed, but my phosephate level is well below .2 more like .05.

The water that the food is frozen in is usually completely saturated with phosphate, as in, if you measure it, it'll read off the scale. Best not to dump that into the tank without necessity, thus the rinse to get rid of it.

+1 on the rinse and it still boosts the algae thinking of getting a sea hare just so i can continue to spoil my fish. if i dont feed the frozen in like 4-5 days the hair algae turns brown lol. so i not crazy in finding my root cause just think its nuts they use preservatives in frozen food dangit. i mean come on whats the use of having fish if ya cant spoil them and feed em frozen treats lol.

really? whats ur current stock then i use the whole cube and they eat it like nothing and beg for more. I only got a regal tang (kids named it Dory) two clowns (small), two firefish, mandaring goby (fat boy) and tiger goby (also fat boy) lol. the peppermint and fire shrimp come out and eat too when i feed the frozen. I try to only spoil em on saturday or sunday sometimes both.

I guess somebody will have to show me or describe it better on how to rinse that food? it's like microscopic in size ??

I like inexpensive flake food, and frozen mysis. I tried frozen brine, but the angel fish won't take to it. I don't get to concerned about trying all the new and improved exotic fish food formula. I do have a book here that provides instructions to make your own feed.

maybe im doing it wrong cuz it still importing a bunch of phos into my tank but i take out a cube put it in a lil cup with some saltwater from the tank. so lil some saltwater like a teaspoon worth just to have a wet bottom the cube sits in let cube dissolve swish around every so often then drain between fingers in the sink trying to keep most and all thawed food in cup and water out. then fill up cup with tank water to swoosh the food around and dump into tank.

oh, okay, I think I understand. I guess a VERY VERY fine strainer might work to. I was cutting the cube in quarters and taking a quarter of it in a small Petri dish and some system water defrosting it then sucking it up w/ a baby medicine dropper and squirt it inside the DT until everybody ate some. I do not use the whole cube. I like feeding the mysis shrimp as I can visibly see everybody getting some good healthy portions of that type of food.

do the corals eat the brine shrimp? ?

I've been defrosting mysis and cyclops in a very small tupperware container. I'll have to check to see what size, but it's ~2" square by ~3.5" tall. I defrost in excess RO water and let the food settle. Then I decant off the water. Perhaps I'll try spinning down several rinses in the centrifuge(!) That'll really get rid of any phosphate!

I was looking for a small container plastic not glass w/ a tight fitting/air tight seal.

I finally found a small bottle of fishing bait ( go figure ) at wall mart for $1.99 dumped the bait, and cleaned. Perfect for defrosting frozen foods in small amount of water in the fridge w/o the stink and spoilage. ...I'll.. I'll have to try out the centrifuge.

how much phosphate does that little amount of food have it? has anybody measured it?

I don't know if anyone has quantified it... The results usually come back, "off the chart".

That said, a few serial dilutions should enable measurement. I'll have to see how far past expiration my phosphate test kit is.

theres a site on the web that has it broken down by manufacturer and food. havent seen it in a long long time. checking now and still cant find it but on my test kit for shiz n giggles 10.0 being the highest of the color chart with the color of dark blue its black like jet black. lmao

It's been over a month of biopellets for me. I tested a few water params last night, and PO4 is detectable. I might even say much higher that I thought it should be. The kit is >1 year old, so it might not be very reliable. I wasn't able to test NO3-/NO2-, but I will tonight.

That said, I'm not seeing the PO4 reduction I was hoping for, so I'm regenerating some purigen.

What's the point of these biopellets, again?

Have you guys seen the sps forum thread about low maintenance tanks (non-zeo, ULNS, etc)? Some folks are having great results.

Paul

I'm interested to hear your feedback on the Biopellets. I am very dubious of how effective it would be. I've never setup a reactor before but I did buy a small Two Little fish reactor and some biopellts both are curently unopened.

I have used purigen in a small media bag in my sump. If I do setup that small reactor which product would you recommend?
