birth of 2 builds totaling 30k gallons

Drew,

The Marbled Files are taking care of the Majanos? I thought they were for Aptasia....

Do they go after zoas ?

See you on Friday :)

Dave B

Hey Dave. They do aptasia also. Don't know about zoos. My angels would eat them anyway so I only keep mainly sps and hard corals.

I have read that about them. My rock and sand was loaded with them Majanos/Aptasia not sure which,...I think Aptasia. I keep hitting them with kalk until I finally beat them. I just put all my rock back in the tank for the 2nd(hope the last) time:headwally:. I was treating it with LC and GFO to stop PO4 leaching,...real pain! This time I made sure it was completely cured before I put it all back. Now its basicly dead rock. If I were to do over from the start,...I would not waste the money and time on "live rock" You end up bringing to many unwanted critters in with it,...much better to add yourself the whatever lifeforms you want.

What are the dates for Macna? I'm heading to Breckenridge through Denver on the 15th for my stepsons wedding.

Hello hedgedrew

next month I become my new 5500 liter (1450 g) sps tank.

I think about a few Chaetodon semilarvatus. All people told me I can't put this fish in tank because they only eat my sps.

It is right?

Greetings Torben

Feed the tank well and I don't see the issue. I havnt run into that problem at all. I'm going to put school of them in new tank. !!

Hello Hedgedrew

I life in Germany in the area of Royal Exclusive and ATI. I know the owners and bought already a 3 meter Dreambox with skimmer and from ATI 6 Sirius Led.

My English is to optimize. You see no problems with shool of Chaetodon semilarvatus in a sps reef? In German forum everybody told me it is not possible.

Everybody who go diving red sea told me about this beatiful fish. I don't go diving there so I can't talk about. For me it is to cold there in winter :D

But from Germany it's is the nearest diving region for reef diving.

I dream for a school of five till ten of these fish. They get very large. Until 30 cm. For me it is the border. In Germany we don't put to much or to big fish in aquarium. For me it is sometimes strange to see this here by RC

I recognize your tanks first when your tank get tank of the month. It is one of the beautiful I have ever seen. And that size. A dream. ...

Hope your monster project go well.
Another dream of me....:D

Congratulations and greetings

Torben

Hedgedrew, your butterflyfish collection in an SPS coral aquarium confounds all previously reported reef keeping experience for these fishes. Torben's questions are well founded. We are all told these fish cannot be kept with corals and yet here you are, doing so with impunity! I am amazed at your success.

Dave. I just was in tahiti diving and snorkeling and I can tell you butterfly's make up predominant part of reefs. Not to say they don't pick to eat. Its just for and sps tank with little or no fleshy stuff it's fine. If you going to put acans and lobo in there forget it.!!!!

Would you please list for us the types of corals that you are so successful with in keeping butterfly fish? Thx!

Dave.M

Sure. I will try. All sps!! All hard corals like chalice. Cup coral. Etc. All montiporas.
All gonipora and alevapora. Sea fans and gorgonians. Its been hit or miss with clams. Some they leave alone and some they will pick on occasionally but less so all the time. I basically think most lps are issues. They have picked at frogspawn and lobo and scollys.

We have had no issue with any acro. Or pacillapora or stylo. Maybe trick is just to train them to eat from water column and feed. We feed 3 to 4x daily.

Torben. Good luck. Just remember these butterfly's will eat your reef up unless it's totally sps acro dominated. Nothing fleshy. Iif you want more variety I would pass. There are angels that are more behaved.
