Black Algae

Came back from vacation to find everything covered by thick black algae. Never seen black algae before. Any thoughts on what this could be and how to get rid of it?

Algae is Algae, starve it.
No lights for 3-4 days.
Water change
Reduce feeding
Reduce nitrate and phosphate to 0
Bring in few inverts you consume it.

Looks like bacteria to me.

Me too. probably a form of cyanobacteria. I would just siphon as much out as possible. I would guess that it will take care of itself if your parameters are in check.

cayno....siphn out what you can. keep the water parameters in check.
if that doesnt work use some chemiclean or similar product, it works really good on cayno

Thanks for the tips. When I was gone the skimmer and one powerhead went off. The tank has been looking a little better since I hooked everything up again. Planning to do a big water change today.

The best thing is if you go away for long periods of time then have a good friend come over once in a while to check on things.

Also take all the necessary precautions to leave enough top up water for the duration of the trip.

If you have a skimmer with a hose attachment that can you can add a 5 gallon bucket so that the waste is collected there instead of the skimmer cup.

Thanks accorexi. I had my brother inlaw watch the tank while I was gone but something didn't go right. At least everything lived.
