I have had a 90 gallon reef tank for about a year now. The first two fish I put in was a black clown and a Percula clown. The black used to be smaller and they used to swim by one another. They also always went into a small cave in the tank. I have recently noticed they are the same size and really don't swim by one another. Some people said they could be a pair and some say they can't. So now my question is should I get another one of each.

They sound like a pair to me. The black clown, in my opinion tend to be passive and get large. I have two black and white clowns and they are very close to the same size. The Percula clown is also one of the more passive clowns. If they were not a pair regardless of the type of clown they would be showing a great deal of aggression towards each other.
1. Clownfish are either sexually immature, neither male or female.
2. When you have two clownfish that are still sexually immature, one will become the larger dominate female and one the male.
3. The female will always remain a female, but the male still have the ability to become a female.
4. Two female clownfish will fight and be aggressive toward one another.
So I would say that you have a pair if there is little to no aggression between them and they are just not a breeding pair yet. You would have trouble introducing another clown to this tank and I would not myself attempt it, but others will tell you it's ok. Some quick and simple research will help you decide the best course for your clowns. Good luck, and a picture is always appreciated.

I don't mean this as a slam against this poster, and maybe it's not worth the trouble, but does anyone else think maybe there should be a sticky explaining what "black clowns" are, and also dispelling the myth of the "black percula"?
