i got a pair of black australian clowns and i want to get something for them to host. what kind of anemone do they host in the wild? is there a chance they will host in a BTA?

thanks

Not really familiar with black austrailian clowns. Do you mean black clarkii's? Can you post a picture. If they are indeed clarkii's they will host any species of hosting anemone.

I am guessing you have black ocellaris clowns. If this is the case it highly unlikely that they are actually from australia. Their natural origin is from the northern parts of australia but they are commercially bred.

yes they are black ocellaris clowns, one with a orange nose. not sure if they are captive bred or actualy wild caught. just know the guy said they were from there. honestly i dont care if they were wild caught or captive bred. i simply would like to know what they will host in and what they host in when they are in the wild.

thanks for the help Michelle! i was having some problems finding a straight answer on that one. now its time to do some research on those nems.

lucky for me i got them in a trade. but they go for around $80 a piece around here. if you have them get you a wild caught pair then they are $200 a pair. i dont know the prices other places, but thats the norm for around here unless somebody runs a sale.

black ones host giganteas in the wild.
here are mine

Noboddi, i know they tank raise alot of them. i was just giving the prices i have found around my area.

adtravels, those are great looking clowns! i love the misbar striping they got going on there! the nem is great looking too.. were did you manage to pick that up from?

There is an excellent chance that the black ocellaris clowns will host in a bta, but it may take longer for them to host than if it were a natural host species. IME, anemones need a species tank for long term health, even if their tentacles do not ever touch!

so giganteas is a harder species to keep in captivity i am hearing. what do you think about this subject? this is what i would like to get but i doubt this tank is big enough for its needs. i might be stuck with a BTA in this case. until i get a bigger tank that is.

Yes giganteas, ritteris, and mertens carpets, all of which are natural hosts for ocellaris have dismal survival records in captivity. They are best avoided imo. BTA are great as my pair of black ocellaris host in a green one. What type of lighting do you have currently?

^^^^ those are great looking clowns you got there! i curently have more then enough light to keep a BTA in my tanks. i had 1 before that ended up getting sucked up into my filtration after a year of having it. never bought another after that for fear of it happening again until i could figure something out to stop it from happening again.
