Black Clowns

I purchased a pair of black clowns not to long ago from my fish store, and everything went well for about a week, after I noticed one of my clowns went missing. I found him on the floor. I then purchased another (quite expensive for the black by the way) and 2 days later the same story. I would rather keep my top open water but I need to find out what is going on. I still have my original black which has grown a bit, but has been by herself for a couple of months now. I am kind of worried to put another in there..

Any suggestions?

Another question I had is, would an anemone help the situation? I currently dont have one but planning on getting one so my clown can host, but I also dont know which anemone would be a good pick for my black perc.?

I lost a Picasso Clown to my floor, and it sucked. I went to my local acrylic/fabricator store and purchased BLACK Eggcrate and I must say the light transfer is the same and you don't even notice that it is on the tanks. Best investmate I have ever made.

I think the same thing happened to my B&W male. They were getting on fine till I added a RBTA and then the female constantly harassed the male, chasing him away from it.

He just disappeared one day, so either stressed to death and eaten by the crew, or jumped (open top too) and eaten by the dogs! :(

Obviously it might not be the same for you, but I thought I'd warn you that a nem might not help the situation.

Good luck!

Thanks, I just want to make sure that I don't end up with a dead clown again... So a bubble tip would be best for this type of clown? Even if I decide to keep him alone for a while?

BTA's aren't actually a natural host for B&Ws... but they are considered the 'easiest' anemone. It's up to the clown really, sometimes they'll jump right in, sometimes it can take a little while (my female took just over a month... but I've heard of some taking a year!) or they could never host.

As I said though it may not help with the aggression. My female has even started biting me since I added the nem! I'm still looking for a replacement male (harder to track them down in the UK) but I think when I add him I'm going to find some kind of 'cage' that he can get into but she can't... at least until she lets him into the nem.

Wow, didn't even realize you were in the UK. Are they pretty hard to get up there? It takes make about 4-8 weeks to get one. I was actually thinking of putting up a thin mesh to cover the top which the light can easily penetrate and heat can escape. I have had my tank up now for about eight months (after my vacation disaster), so I am not in a hurry to throw an Anemone in just yet.

I saw a tank yesterday where the guy used some mesh fabric, possibly garden netting. (the kind you use to keep birds out of cherry trees ect) He made a frame using a window screen frame kit from Lowes and put the mesh in the frame.. It was pretty kewl.

I actually just went out to purchase some of that mesh, sounds like thats going to be the best bet for know.. Anyone have any luck with these guys laying eggs? Just curiuos..

My black and white clowns were spawning last night - also 2 weeks ago. I could see the ovipositor and they were busy for a couple of hours, but I couldn't see any eggs. I'm wondering if they ate them? These were their first 2 spawns, so I think that might be the case. I hope eventually there will be some eggs. Would like to try and raise some. Have had them about a year now.
