Black Darwin Ocellaris

iBluewater.com has some, but they don't specify if they're captive bred or wild caught. You could try e-mailing them. Even if their stock is captive bred they may be able to get hold some wild caught specimens for you.

I emailed them a while ago and they said that the clowns listed on the site are tank raised. I just sent a follow up e-mail asking if they could order wild-caught specimens.

Anyone aware of other potential sources?

I don't think there is anyone collecting them. The original collector was killed by a croc during a collection dive and I don't think anyone has picked up the torch since then.

Any reason you would like wild caught over tank raised?

I have only seen tank raised these last couple years.

Not trying to start a war on tank raised vs. wild caught, but I have serious issues with tank raised clowns:

(1) They look weird: most have blunted faces to some degree or otherwise look "off." Nothing like the appearance of a wild caught fish IMO.

(2) They exhibit unnatural behavior: difficult to host and swim near the surface, etc.

(3) Although quality tank raised clowns currently in circulation are admittedly healthier than wild caught due to collection/shipment stress, I believe this will change as we continue to breed generations of tank raised clowns. First, the genetic diversity is far less and there is increased chance of inbreeding. Second, in our aquariums, natural selection does not weed out the less "fit" fish (100s of fry can survive from a single brood vs. maybe 1 or 2 in the wild).

There was a guy years ago that was trying to get a permit to collect them himself. The paperwork sounded HORRIBLE... At that time I had a pair of blacks with a mixed bloodline. One was ORA and one was from England. If I remember correctly a guy named Ed bought them. That was the best bloodline in the states that I was aware of at the time...

I think that your 3 assumptions on tank raised clowns are a bit hyped up. With proper knowledge (and a good breeder) you can find good clowns without too much difficulty. I've seen wild clowns exhibit some weird swimming behaviors too. Give them time to get relaxed and you will be fine.

I'm not saying it isn't possible to get normal looking/behaving tank raised clowns. Just saying that most are sub-par IMO. Wild caught are more consistent when it comes to these traits.

I have one wild caught one but other the other one jumped about a year ago. I would like to get another one for the one that I have. I have had now her for almost 3 and half years now.

Where did you get the original pair? Also, is the remaing clown being hosted by an anemone? If so, what kind?
