I have this Bi-Color Angel for two weeks and it looks like he has black ich on one side on top, on the yellow side. He had pop-eye two days ago so I gave him a freshwater bath and it went away. I have a 46 gallon bow front acrylic with the reef octopus bh-1000 protein skimmer and an aqua-top canister filter. The other inhabitants are 3 scarlet hermit crabs, 1 orchid dotty back, and 2 Ocellaris clowns. There is 40 lbs live sand and 40 lbs base rock. Is this black ich? I also have a diatom outbreak any ideas on getting rid of it. I filled it with tap water(mistake) and am now doing water changes with distilled water. I've had the aquarium up and running for a month. One more thing how much lbs of live rock, do I need to make the base rock turn live?

If its black ich it should be all over the fish, not just on one side. How are your water parameters, black ich is often associated with poor water quality. If your not sure Prazipro is reef safe and very effective. As to the question about how much liverock to seed the base rock... A pound or two would suffice or you could do as much as you wanted. I seeded 200lbs of base rock with 30lbs of liverock

Your nitrates are most likely too high (over feeding) which caused the bicolor to have an bacteria infection. Also, imo your tank is too young and not fully cycled. If you used NSW, possible to have the tank ready sooner but you made your own with tap water. Don't worry about the diatoms they will burn out once the silicate is used up.
As of now its a FO tank then you could treat the whole tank but something tells me that your bio filter is not up to par yet to handle the ammonia levels since you cant use carbon or skimming with most treatments.
I would slow down the water changes. Your going to wipe out your bio filter even more and change the chemistry too much if do too many W/C. IMO treat the whole tank at this point and get that biofilter established. You can use seachem paraguard or stress guard (but only one or the other).
Increase your greens for the angel (frozen seaweed dry if it eat it) with garlic.
