Black Ornate Ghost Pipefish

I saw this really sweet specimen at Country Critters in Long Island, was told it is eating guppies. Anyone have experience with the orhate ghost pipefish, please share your experiences.

we visited that thing for over two weeks and it never ate for us. we always managed to show up after it was fed. sooo, they held off and fed it for us today and sure enough, down went a guppy.

this guy is insane but i really hope he gets over this guppy thing.

Just curious, how much was it?

I believe this specimen was from the red sea but I dont know that he was for sale. It looked healthy and active and seemed to exhibit a feeding response when I approached the tank. Brad send me a PM for the full size image.

The fish is 3.5" and costs $129.00. I have been trying to locate this rare fish for my marine planted tank for a long time. Unfortunately the seller does not ship. I am on the west coast and do not know anyone in New York that can help me out.

We've had her for over a week now. She tankfully moved over to live brine. Eats like a pig too. Still workin on the frozen though. But she's looking fantastic, great color and great response to every feeding. And they are lightning quick when they snick.

Thanks for all the comments guys. The fish is truly spectacular when it is splayed out but most of the time it drifts about looking like a piece of floating litter.

She is still goin strong, hasn't switched over to frozen yet, but hey, i'm just glad to be done with the guppies. Unfortunately she's still in the specimen cup. Any body have any clue what size tank would be good for these guys? i have a jbj 24dx, still in the box, but i was hoping maybe smaller like the 12?

Seeing as I'm the only other person who has seen this fish I would say that the 24 jbj tank would be a perfect size and setup for a moderate energy live rock tank. Keep us posted as to what you do with it.

i've seen two of these, the black one like yours and a orange white one. i'm seriously considering getting one and setting up a species tank. i'm trying to gather info as well

Like I said at the other forum......
Live brine is lacking nutrition. It must be enriched.
Preferably live mysis that have been fed a high quality pellet food is better.
The lighting in a nano cube is probably much stronger than needed. The flow might be too.
And keeping it in a specimen cup is kind of cruel.
They will move around a large tank. A full grown adult can almost reach top to bottom in a 12G nano.

Hi Aulostomus, welcome to Reef Central.

I dont think this guy is being fed live brine. He was eating gut loaded guppies and from what I could tell, he seemed quite at ease in a 'coral tank' which had a lot of light and more flow than you would think he could take. He was only 3-4" long so if he is being kept in a large specimen cup for temporary conditioning I think he'll be alright.
