Black Regal Tang

has anyone ever seen this before on a Regal Tang? Would you happen to know what would cause this?

SG 1.026
KH 8.0
ph 8.0
PO4 0.03 - running GFO to get this down further
Ca 435
Ammonia, Nitrate and Nitrite - undetectable

I feed a variety of foods:
Nori
New Spectrum Small Fish Pettlets
Bio Blend Herbavore Diet
Frozen Bloodworms
Frozen Mysis
Frozen baby brine

wow..was it in normal coloration when you bought it...?
probably genetic abnormality,though i am no expert...
but if it is behaving well,eating normally...then be happy to know that you have a unique specimen...:fun2:

I remember seeing one like that a while ago, I can't remember if it stayed the same or changed back to blue.

He was normal coloration when I got him - about in August. I noticed him being different mid October.

Never seen a black one. It's definately interesting. Everything else looks normal best I can tell. Has the fishes behavior changed any over the last few months.?

Would love to see more pics of it. I know they can display a lighter or darker blue depending on their mood but I've never seen it that dark. And when they display a different shade of blue (light blue when they are spooked) it is usually short-lived. Very cool, please try to put up some more pics.

This aberrant I received a few years ago has kept the same color as it has grown...

Here are some pics that I have. I'll have to break out the tripod and good camera for better shots:

older camera phone cruddy pics (from October). The white spot was not on the fish, it is just the poor pic quality. He has actually gotten darker since the pic was taken (his cheeks are now black):

How big is the tank. Is it possible it's stress related?

92 gallon. He is small for a regal.

I housed one in there for 6 years prior to my stupidity (tank crash)

He was pretty black when I noticed him changed. He had the blue spot on his body, blue on his cheeks and a little blue on his bottom fins. Since October, he lost some more of the blue coloration. The only blue left is the spot on his body.

If it was slow i'd guess it is a natural change rather than something to worry about, although that's only a guess.

that is amazing. you know what i want to see? a showoff thread for abnormally colored fish. ive seen regal angels that were dark orange with stripes like fire, and ive seen a clown tang with circles instead of stripes. IMO these types of fish are amazing to see. do you mind if i create that thread and use this thread as an example?
