best picture I have seen of one is in this thread http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1339771
nava405 has one look at that one in his thread. One of the nicest I have seen. you would think he is a black tang, but his nose gives that away.
So there is a straight black variety of the Scopas and the Rostratum? I have never seen or heard black scopas. How rare is the all black scopas? Where are they found? Here is my black tang a Rostratum.
Is this is the black scopas you are referring to? This is from Gasman.
Or is this the black scopas? I think this one looks like a Rostratum. This picture is from nava.
I know you said the nose gives it away but small Rostratums don't have that ezagerated nose like adults. Can someone clarify this for me? Thanks Tim
The other give away is black tangs and for that fact just plain black. The scopas you see from nava has lines and spots you can on him. A black tang will not have those markings. Hope that clears it up for you.
another example sorry to carry on is the yellow scopas tangs. The difference between them is a yellow is smooth yellow and a yellow scopas will have spots and line accents in his skin. Not sure if you have scene a yellow scopas, but hoping that might make it easier to understand what I am saying.
I've read that the key differences between the black scopas and the black tang is the elongated nose and the black tang should have a tinge of green at the base of the dorsal fin. Apparently there are people who sell the black scopas as though it were a black tang to rip people off. I was just curious to see a picture of peoples black scopas to see how difficult it is to distinguish the two.
not all blacks will show their green though. I have fairly large one who will only flash green when he is upset. Most of the time he is completely black though. The best way though of telling the difference between the two will be the ability to see markings as above mentioned.
