Black snail with Bright Red Foot, most likely from TBS rock, anyone know what is it?

good or bad?

its about 3/4" long, doesn't look like its killed anything yet.

I was told by Mary that the snails with the RED flesh are most likely bad..... However I have had what you describe in my tank for about 6 months with no problems(that I have seen)

I think it is actually really pretty :-)

I got the same thing on my TBS last week. It's just over 1/2". Dark shell like a nassarius only I haven't seen a proboscis, but I haven't gotten a real close look yet. I took some pics waiting for them to come back to post. (Broke my digital but I checked option B with the CD...another Kodak moment brought to you by TBS!)

I finally found a description of these in a Fla reef book. BRight red foot with a smooth shell with bands on it. They are snail cannibals. I had one in my tank, but have not seen it recently. It will go into the mantis tank if I find it again.

There is also a Limpet with a red foot. They are beautiful and naturally have a taste for coral. I found this out AFTER I found mine. Naturally I haven't seen him since.

Snail cannibals!?!

That's bad huh?

And do all limpets eat corals or just the red footed kind? I'd hate to have to get rid of my keyholes.

Just the limpets with red feet. They are beautiful. So far I haven't found mine again, and haven't seen any damage.

The snail is called a tulip snail "which glides over the sand in search of other snails has reddish flesh and a smooth, graceful shell circled by intermittent brown lines" page 22.

Source is paperback , Peterson Field Guide, "Coral Reefs, Caribean and Florida" by Eugene H. Kaplan.

I couldn't find the reference on the limpet.

This is a tulip snail, not what i have.

I'll try to take some pics if i see it again.

The shell is all black, not stripes, solild, and black

and its flesh is super bright red, not orange-ish like the tulip snail

the original post does not describe a tulip snail. Tuplip snails have a distinct white shell, with spiral black lines circles around them, from the photos I've seen.

The poster describes a black smooth shelled snail. I have one that looks very similar to the snails in the below post, except for the flesh of the snail.

That describes the one I have as well.
It's been in the tank along with the TBS for almost three weeks. I have seen him several times and it seems to keep to itself and grase on algea and rock crud.
I haven't gotten out to get a new digital but will post a pic as soon as I can.

I can say this is not the snail I have.

Even though it has a red foot, the shell is not the same shell as the snail I have.

Also, these are not noted as found in FL, or gulf, but in Austrailia.

Next time I see the snail, I make a digital representation of him.

Who said this hobby is relaxing must have been a natural born masochist.

I like that!

I've also seen :

Who said this hobby is relaxing must have never had a reef tank.
