Black spots on clowns

Hi all,

Sorry this seems a common question but I don't think I can find an answer that fits my circumstances.

I have a relatively new tank, maybe 3 months. I've had a pair of fancy clowns for 4 weeks now. I have just noticed some black spots developed all over the orange colourings. They seem very healthy apart from this, very active in the tank and eating lots.

Nothing much more in the tank apart from small clusters of zoa that they never seem to bother with.

Can somebody advise what this could be and if I need to worry about it??

Thanks
Bob

Hi Bob, I'd say have a look at hyper melanisation which is basically a reaction to them beginning to host corals. They rub against them and the skin reacts like acne. They heal up over time and you won't notice any future discolouration.
That's the first possibility, the other is black spot. I haven't seen or heard of this on clowns before but it is a small flatworm that would need to be treated. More info can be found online.

Looks like a reaction to hosting like Moort82 mentioned, are the clowns hosting anything? If it's black spot or black ich, that's the worst case I have ever seen. You could also post this in the disease section

Thanks for the responses. That does seem to fit, but I didn't think there was anything they'd try to host in!

Perhaps this is the culprit... Although the clowns rarely go to that side of the tank...
