Black Tang in a 75

Am I absolutely crazy to keep a black tang in a 75 gallon? It would be the only tang and the tank has a light fish load.

The reason I ask is that fishbase lists a max size of 21cm for Z. Rostratum, and 20 cm for Z. Flavescens. Why does the 1cm difference make it inappropriate for a 4 foot tank.
 
I have one in a 65, but I knew I would need an upgrade for this fish, at the size of a quarter the 65 was plenty. Now at 2"s he will be going into a 120, yes a 4 footer. This will be his home for a year roughly until the 300 or possibly larger is up and running. If you decide to get it, plan on upgrading to accommodate the fish.
 
Just wanted to add that I have seen these come in the size of a dinner plate. Eventhough it may not be listed as such, they seem to get quite a bit bigger than a yellow.
 
dont do that to the tang..... They live longer and will just be happier in a bigger tank.

I will take him if you decide you wanna give it a good home :p haha they are beautiful fish
 
My black tang has been in my 75 gallon tank for awhile. He is around 4 inches now. He is a model citizen in the tank, shows no aggression and reef safe

Except for the longer snout, and the way the dorsal fin starts out is a little different. And the silver/blue streak down the back of the black tang as well. Also anyone that has a black tang would know or should at least know.

I agree 100% unless some bills didn't get paid at that time. I knew when I bought mine an upgrade was in the future. I always said I would buy a Black Tang when I found a small one, never thought I would see 4 of them the size of a quarter.
 
A 300g upgrade, as you mentioned, is a LOT of money (I just did a 240 and that was just a FO). If bills are already getting skipped, such an upgrade is highly unlikely, so I wouldn't buy any fish with that upgrade in mind. Get the fish after the upgrade, IMO.

If you are referring to me don't worry. The only reason my tanks are smaller is because of an addition being done to the house. I had a 265, a 125 and a 75 all running at the same time before I bought this house. So I know the price involved with larger tanks. I had to break them down because of remodeling the house there was no place for large tanks with all the work being done. I also knew I was going to an addition and the large tank would go there eventually.
 
It was for the OP as well. But honestly I don't even know why I bother. These threads NEVER end with anyone saying, "Gosh, you know, I should probably get the big tank first, then the fish"...

Just a waste of keystrokes on my part....
