I got a glass sump from glasscages.com and the top trim came off. No i didnt lift it with the trim. It was loose when i moved it, the whole thing started to wiggle.

I called glasscages and they said that the top trim is only there for decoration and you really dont need it.

I dont need the trim, but does it serve as a support for the tank?

I am no expert nor tank maker. But, I think there are some tanks that the trim is just decorative, protective, or functional (to hold the lid). In those cases you don't need it. In some cases, the trim is indeed important - such as with a center brace. These braces are usually in larger tanks where there might be an opportunity for bowing. So it would depend on how you tank is made. Consulting with the manufacturer as you did seems like the best idea. A little silicone caulk should keep the trim on if you want held in place.

I think i'll silicone the trim back on along with siliconing all the joints again....

glasscages tanks are funny sometimes

The black trim on gc tanks are definitely not required. I think it took me all of a month for that cheaply made strip to fall off of my 120.
