bleaching out?

What does it mean when corals are getting bleached out ? And what am I suppose to do about it?

it means that the corals are losing their colors

Light has alot to do with it but it could be many things like phos,ammio levels could be too high.

I have the Nova pro extreme t5 fixture with 6 bulbs though, No Metal Halide's I dont really have anything really high up all are medium level

if you really want to find the problem we need to know more about your parameters.run tests and post the results for everyone to see.how many watts are each bulb 54?are all your stonies bleaching?

You might be putting in to much calcium or alkalinity. How do you dose them?

Bleaching is when a coral expels all its photosynthetic zooanthellae. Some corals can recover from this in time provided they can obtain enough nutrients. They will eventually rebuild their symbiotic zooanthellae back up.

Bleaching is also often confused with RTN. A bleached coral will appear white but will still have polyps and tissue. RTN (rapid tissue necrosis) common in SPS, is when the coral actually sheds its tissue and is actually in the process of dying.

The only thing I've been able to do is frag off the unaffected areas, that will save some of it.. other wise it all dies rather quickly. that's my experiences. anybody else,have any other ideas..

Like Tony said, the only real solution is damage control. Many believe RTN is pathogenic in nature. In the past, I have also clipped the tips of an effected colony, most of which survived.

Also, another cause for bleaching is high temps.

Hey I have tested most of my paramaters not all.
Nitrate 0
Nitritie 0
PH 8.4ish
Salinity 1.026
Temp 78
I don't have proper test kits to test any of the other things accurately. But yes my bulbs are 54watts

I do have the 2 part kit but I have not dosed ever in my tank yet

i would get some good test kits.test for calcium, alk to start with if u have lps's just loosing color but the tissue looks real good its different than sps's turning white what is bleaching out?

+1 0n the test kits and on the damage control if it is R.T.N.or R.T.D. Everything that I have read about either of these diseases, is to eliminate the affected area to save the unaffected areas and to prevent the spread it to other corals. And pray for the best. I would test all of your parameters first. Good luck.

It was my LPS that bleached out, some finger leather and some other coral kinda looks like hair blowing in the wind kind of. Not sure the name I dont have any sps yet in my tank. Soon I hope
