bloated hypo naso???? help

I put this in the reef fish forum, but I think I should have put it in here. I have a naso tang in hypo that started swelling last night. It is swimming fine and the coloring looks fine. He has been in quarantine since july 4th and has been eating and doing well. Is the salinity too low? I am measuring with a refractometer that is right at 1.009, but maybe I need to recalibrate. Please help.
Thanks

I have treated all fish in my current tank with hypo in an attempt to keep ich out of the system. The other fish have made it through with flying colors.

I'll try and post a picture.

Just a note about refractometers.

Regardless of what most manufacturers say, many cannot be calibrated with ro/di or distilled.

For peace of mind, get yourself some Pinpoint 53.0mS calibration fluid and adjust your refract to 35 ppt or 1.0265

The stuff is cheap and good insurance.

FWIW, my refract is off .003 when using ro/di :)

There is also a DIY calibration fluid that can be found in the chemistry forum. The first thing to do is double check your refractometer's calibration.

still working on a picture, but to explain it again, if you take a perfectly healthy 3 inch naso tang and puff it up so that it expands laterally along it's whole body (like a steroid freak fish), that is what I have going on. I raised the salinity in an attempt to help a bit. I was thinking that it might be osmotic issue that would cause the fish's cells to take on water due to the possibly too low salinity?????

sorry that i'm off the topic. but i would like to ask why is my no3 is so high. can u guys let me know the problem. thank you

fighton03,

If your refractometer is a bit off, osmotic balance could be an issue. Another possibility is an internal infection totally unrelated to hypo. How long have had the fish?

is the fish ok with 1.009 salinity? because i only try to 1.016

They are alright with 1.009 for the short durations used for treatment. At 1.016, the salinity is not low enough to have an effect on ick.

but the salinity 1.016 is my tank salinity. usually treatment i using tap water. it kills mostly parasite.

You may think you are killing the parasites but ich is not always visable to the eye during some of their life. In order to fully kill the ich on the infected fish, all requirements of a QT tank must be meet as well as a stable SG of 1.009 for 4-6 weeks minimum.

Where are you trying to post a thread that it won't let you? The only place that shouldn't be able to post a thread to is the selling forums until you've been around a bit as an active member.
