blown return pump

Well I just got home from a family cook out and noticed the tank off. I rushed to the tank and gave it a once over and noticed a burnt smell coming from the sump. I couldnt tell what was burnt so I disconected everything and reset the circuit breaker. I pluged things in one by one and everything started working. When I came to the return pump I gave it a once over and pluged it in and it didnt work. I then unpluged it and took it apart only to find that it had blown up! I now need a new return pump :( ( I have a temporary one running in the tank now but now. Damn what a scare.

Well I found out that the fan I had blowing across the surface of the water is also not working. I ordered another return pump (rio hyperflow 17) ill see how that works for me. Now I also have to run to walmart and get another fan (poor mans chiller)

I'm just curious what can you do when you don't got a backup pump?

Just make sure there is plenty of flow. Basically, run it as if you did not have a sump. It can go a few days without it, a lot of people run tanks without sumps, so I would not worry about that. If you heat the tank from the sump, you may have to move the heater up if it is an extended wait. But better to think of the what-if's now and have a plan ready!

The way I look at it is like this. If we don't depend on the flow through the sump for the main tank circulation, the tank can and will survive with out that flow. Set your system up to have a closed loop or in tank flow that will support it. This of course is JMO.

Your lucky you caught it before tank crashed or worse your house went up in smoke!!
I have seen this happen with older Rio pumps and similar (cap, genex sub.) made ones..That is why I never trust a LFS when they tell you these pumps are awesome...All it takes is seeing the carnage of one of these blowups to make you leery ..
