Hey gang.

So check out what our Bluechin (or Blue throat) are doing.

Pretty cool looking. I'd love to say its a prelude to mating, but doubtful. We just ain't got that kind of luck.

Doesn't look aggressive, even though some mating rituals can be. But no one comes out any worse for wear.

Started about a week ago, they do it almost everyday.

Any ideas?

Hard to say for sure but it looks matingesk... I would cover the top of the tank for sure before one carpet surfs... Not sure how tall the tank is but 30" or more is needed for a spawning rise with angels, I would imagine that triggers are similar. Getting them to mate would just be the start of your problems of trying to raise the young

There are screens on the front half top of the tank, pretty secure. Held down with the hinge from the glass tops. Back have is still glass. Tank is 30" tall.

In a way I hope its not mating. Not a clue what to do if it happens. We did have a maroon clown one time long ago that spawned eggs, but she was the only clown in the tank.

I tried looking, anyone know if tiggers are livebearers or do they lay eggs?

My blue throat pair will also display this behavior from time to time, but in a much more graceful manner. Your pair sure likes to play rough, lol. My male will also chase the female around on occasion. I don't see it as aggression or dominance at all. I take it as some sort of courting behavior.

Keep an eye on them and let us know what happens. I tried researching this behavior when I first noticed it and couldn't find much.

Interesting. It does look a bit of a dominance thing, but that could all be how it goes down being how triggers are all about odd behavior lol. I agree though, doesn't look like anyone is getting hurt so I'd just keep an eye on em and see how it plays out for now. And oh yeah, I'd post updates too. ;)

this behavior is seen in tiny baby trigs and in trigs of the same sex...
my male ch do it all the time and did it a few times when they were a male/female couple (both were around 2.5 inches then) once given the extra room, the female immed turned male...they are both now around 9 inches and still not sexually mature in terms of size....

Triggers are weird lol

One of our Crosshatches decided to do laps around a powerhead for a few weeks... just stopped a few days ago...

They also play tug of war with nori wrapped rocks...

I have had a pair for a few years now and have never seen them dance like that. They have bred a couple of times but only caught a glimpse of it once. It was over in a flash and there were eggs all over the sand. Big meal for the other fishes. The other times I just noticed the change in color on the male, the cleaning of the sand for hours and hours by the pair of them and the feasting fishes later on. I have read they are supposed to guard their nests but I have not seen that at all.
