BLUE FACE ANGEL IN 1200 gal REEF

I have a 1200 gal reef mostly SPS 20 nice chalice corals, some nice scoly's not many zoos. There is a beautiful large Blueface at the local store that has been there for 6 months in a 40 gal tank. Eating everything, frozen, flake Rod's Food.I have fallen in love with the size and beauty of this animal. My fellow reefers tell me the chance of him not doing major damage to my reef is 50/50 I am not worried about flesh corals (wilsoni, brains, scolys) I can move them to my 550 gal. Does anyone have success with this type of angel in large reef?I don't want him to start nibbling on chalice corals or favia. If I could feel my odds are a little higher than 50/50 I will chance it. I have a great population of large tangs etc. The only fish that do any damage is Copperband (will nibble at Acans and some fleshy corals) but tank is so large I can tolerate him picking Also small file fish that does not touch majanos but nibbles on similar corals as buttery. Advice from experienced reefers.........Thanks Hurlock

No one is going to be able to make you feel any better about getting it or not. Fish are like people and have personalities of their own. If you like the fish and are willing to take a chance go for it. If you are not willing to take the chance then don't do it.

I can tell ya your chalices will have no eyes left on them when he is done. Every angel i have had always eats the eyes right off em.

Hi Hurlock!

I have watched your video on youtube many many times and love it more every time i watch it!

You have an incredible tank!

I also have angels in my reef, but after they did some picking at my chalices I set up a 75 gallon LPS tank so I could keep Angels and LPS.

I have heard of Angels doing great w/ LPS and I have heard stories of Angels destroying LPS.

Im not sure how much help that is but good luck and we would love to see an updated tank VIDEO!!!!

That is one of my absolute favorite fish, but the odds of it doing bad things to your corals is definitely there. A very hard choice . . .

I had a blueface angel for a while and i dont have any chalices so not sure on those but he was fine with the sps and favia i have.He ate up any zoas like they were candy but i have yet to see any large angels that dont.I would prob move the chalices if you are dead set on getting him and maybe leave one in and see how he does with it.Then if he does fine with the one you can always move them back in a few at a time. The Pomacanthus angels seem to be the riskiest but it is always possible you will get on the good side of that 50/50 chance.

Hey Steve, this is Mark, Jake's friend. You might want to contact kevinpo(Kevin Pockell). He kept one for a while in a 500g sps reef.

In that size reef you should be able to put the challices high in the tank and with a lot of flow around them. Just make it hard for your angel to sit there and look at the chalices. The angels I've kept always tend to eat the corals low in the tank. They sit there look at it for a minute and then eat away. Anything higher in my tank they don't really touch. I had 2 spots of soft coral polups. One set high in the tank one low in the tank. The ones lower got completely eaten within a week. The other ones haven't been touched.

Anything I don't want them to touch I keep in very high flow. It is enough flow so the fish can't sit still. They usually find it too much trouble to get and leave it alone.

Also keep your angel well fed. I would say give it a try. Angels are amazing fish! How big is the one at your LFS?
