Blue Gigantea

After 6 months of asking, my LFS was finally able to find two blue gigs. I rushed down and put a deposit on one.

I have been hooked on saltwater for 40 years and a successful reefer for about 10. I have never had a problem with BRAs and LTAs and set this tank up specifically for a colored gig.

The one I picked is bluer, fuller, stickier, and and well attached to his crate. It looks better than the other, even though just unpacked a few hours earlier.

My question is: should I take it home to my stable reef tank (with no other anemones to infect) and then treat if it acts sick? -OR- Do I leave it in the store for a week to see how it does? The store is a good reef store and has had two drab green haddoni for over 4 months that are both very healthy.

My biggest fear is: if I leave it and it dies and the other has already sold, that I will have missed my once-in-a-lifetime chance to buy a blue gig.

Maybe I am cocky but I feel that my reef is much better than all the LFS here where I live. If you think your tank is great, then bring him home. If the LFS can provide great care for him then leave him at the store. Keeping two new Gigantea together, IMO, double your risk of failure. One may be sick and get the other one sick also.

For me, if I think the store can provide great care for them, and I only put down a deposit to hold him, they can take the risk and if he is alive and well after 1 week, then I can get him. If I can provide better care, then I would just get him and put him into my tank.

Once you get one Gigantea, you will always want another one. Trust me

That gigantea is healthy looking enough to bring it home. You will have to monitor its health for the next couple weeks. If it deflate more than 3 times in a couple days, pull it out and treat. If not, leave it alone.

I did it. I took it home!

Definitely a Gig as you can see by the under side.
The two clowns, blood shrimp, 4 Peppermint shrimp and hermit crabs all had to check him out.

In less than 5 minutes, the two Chocolate Ocelleris were taking an anemone bath!

Let us know if the clowns try to burrow into the gig's mouth. IME, it's an indicator that the gig is sick. Fortunately, it doesn't appear as they're doing so in the video, so I think your nem is in good shape.

IMO, that is way too little flow for Gigantea. I hope you turn the PH off for the video. If this is not the case, your Gigantea may not do well long term.

I turned off two. Wanted him to settle in and get attached.

How is this for flow? I had to move the 2 power heads that were off. When turned on they were raising the edges of the Gig off the sand and really blowing it around.

Now it has a steady ruffle of the tentacles. I can direct more flow over it if it needs more.

The 2 pumps I just turned on are on a Hydor Korellia Smart Wave pump controller and alternate off and on at opposite sides of the tank for shifting currents every 30 minutes.

Still not nearly enough flow. Gigs, like mags, love flow. I think Minh's video is good example of adequate flow. I know addictedreefer has one gig that moved up a rock right next to his mp40.
