Blue Green Chromis Jumped out of tank

He jumped out I guess over night. He is my first and only tenant and I woke up with him not there and behind the tank.
Why would he do this and how can I prevent it from happening again?

if he is the only fish, I am surprised he would do this. As far as I know, they are not necessarily known to be jumpers(some fish are). Maybe he was just trying to get to the other side?

Sorry for the joke, I am very sorry for your loss. Sometimes some fish just JUMP. There may not be any specific reason, they just do. The only good way to do this is cover the tank with some kind of lid, but it has to be an open lid for gas exchange. Some fish that are known to jump do it because they are restricted to a small space. In this particular case, I would not think this was the reason. Even in a very small tank, chromis are fairly small, and I doubt he would feel so cramped as to jump.

okay. Its just so strange because he was doing fine, never seemed to jump or anything. Maybe I'll reposition my light on top or get a larger piece of plexi glass to cover more of the top.

I've had at least 5 fish go carpet surfing in 30 yrs of being in the hobby.
Most times its one fish chasing the other other times its just the type of fish that is prone to do it like wrasses for an example. Try putting egg crate over your aquarium it will stop 99% of the fish getting out and it will not interfere with your lighting. You can get it at Home Depot or Canadian Tire in the lighting department.

I am soooo sorry ramtmac!!! That really stinks :( Atleast he wasn't a $50 fish...

what about the clear strips that come with glass lids...are they ok to use??

You have crabs and stuff right?? Maybe one crawled into his sleeping quarters and scared the hell out of him

I came home tonight to find my blue damsel on the carpet. It must have been there for quite awhile because it was pretty stiff. I put it in a glass of tank water just in case, but it was a goner. Eventhough it was just a damsel I'm still a bit bummed because I loved it's brilliant blue color. It might have been on the run from my flame angel. The flame liked to put a run on the damsel a couple of times a day. Just ran out of room today, I guess.

Sorry for your loss.

ANY AND ALL fish can jump. Some are more prone to it than others. IMHO, you will be much better served by using a DIY screen top made using window screen frame and 1/4" clear mesh. Solid tops of any material will certainly stop jumpers, but the really big downside is that they also severely limit gas exchange at the surface and will require frequent cleaning to prevent loss of light due to algae/salt buildup.

So sorry for the loss of the fish

EVERY FISH SHOULD BE CONSIDERED JUMPERS...

You need to put a screen top on your tank

Build a 9" rim for the tank out of pine (light) and laminate. Or put a mesh across the top.

Reason? He's a chromis. If he'd had a friend he would have killed him first then jumped out.

Thanks for making me smile!

FWIW - one of the chromis that was a part of my frag tank system (60g FT, 100g rubbermaid stock tank for sump) went on the waterslide to the sump shortly after I set it all up. He lived down there for many months and then one day I found him on the basement floor. No apparent reason - he just jumped - I suppose just because he could.
