Hey everyone, feel free to read my extra long post and shine any light on my situation. my blue hippo has been acting very strange latly (well stranger then it's normal strangeness). About a week ago I came home and noticed the floor and drawers where I keep fish things were soaked with water. I sat on the couch where I could not see my tank but I could hear it and heard splashing. I immediately jumped up and started looking for a fish on the floor ( I have screens on top but some how my yellow wrasse jumped out right in front of my eyes twice within the past week and had to be saved ). I saw nothing. So I sat and watched for about an hour and saw nothing suspicious. So back into the other room I went and again a violent loud splashing. This time I peaked my head around the corner and saw my blue hippo backing his tail up into the corner of the tank and splashing water everywhere (as all the other fish freaked out, I'm guessing this is why my wrasse jumped ). I thought maybe he was bored or hungry so I fed him and 5 mins later he was back at it. Funny thing is he doesn't do it when I'm in the room or sitting near the tank but as soon as I leave non stop spalshing. Yesterday I started hearing a different noise comming from the tank so just as before I had to peak around the corner making sure the hippo didn't see me so I could catch him in the act. Now he's bitting the water surface very violently, getting himself all worked up to the point his colors dull. I've googled this strange behavior to find out if this is normal or maybe some kind of reaction to something he's not happy with but couldn't really find out anything that pertained to my tank. We all know hippos do some weird things but this is concerning me as I've never seen it before from mine. I'm going to attempt to post a video of him bitting at the water to see if you guys can pick up on anything that could be making him act this way. I'll post some background on my hippo and tank.
6 1/2 " blue hippo tang. I've had him around a year but I was told he was 6 years old a year ago so he's got to be at least 7 by now. He has never shown much aggression twords the other fish as far as bitting but occasionally he'll swim fast at them to scare them. the only thing that seemed to bother him was when I added a powerhead near where he sleeps and he was bitting it and smashing himself on it to move it out of his spot. So I took that out and now he's fine. That incident was more then 6 months ago.
180 gallon tank 6 ft long closed loop as well as 2 mp40 for circulation. protein skimmer, added oxygenation.
