Blue Jaw Trigger with mental issues

Serenity is so expensive
I have a Blue Jaw Trigger fish that I have had for about 6 months. He is very nervous. He hides if anyone comes close. He does come out when I feed the tank but if I move too fast he runs back to his man cave.

All this I am OK with however lately he has been injuring himself which has m concerned. At night when all the lights are out in the house and just the moon lights are on within the tank he swims as fast as he can against the glass, always the same side of the tank, eastern facing side of the tank almost 1/2 the night. He eventually goes to sleep in his cave but I have been up to check on him at 2,3,4 in the morning he is there trying to swim back to the ocean. He paces up and down the same side with fin on full into the glass.

This has caused a wearing down of his lower lip. He is not bleeding or anything but it is now a very dark spot.

I swear I would provide pictures but if I even try to come near with a camera he hides.

At first I thought it was kinda funny but now I am getting concerned as I said. I don't want him to live in a stressful environment.

I though last night that maybe some how he is seeing some sort of reflection so I got some black construction paper and taped it to this side of the tank. Interesting enough (now this was just the first night so can't say for certain that this was just a coincidence) he did not assault this side of the tank. He did continue to do his thing though but now in a different area, the rear of the tank on the side where I have a HOB CPR Fuge.

it would not be easy to put black paper where the fuge is (that thing is heavy when full and I don't fit too well behind the tank)

Outside of his nervous behavior when people are around and the night time desire to find the ocean, he seems fine. I can sit still and watch him move about the tank especially around dinner time. He has a little friend in the man cave (blood shrimp) that he loves having around, he is not aggressive towards any other fish.

Tank Parameters are all in spec
He is a juvi only like ~3 inches, fat

Please any thought or ideas?

i have a blue jaw he was timid at first because of my hippo was terrorizing him constantly, well i got rid of the hippo and he's always out swimming about. i just added a pink-tail and i love this fish, both are not aggressive so far and the pink -tail is coming out more now by the day. i have a 250 gal DD, SPS Dominate system with about 4 tangs and 3 wrasses and 1 purple firefish.

They are swimmers and need room to do so...as Snorvich asked, tank size? who else is in there with her?

Going to the OP's profile I found this pic that seems to have the blue jaw in it. If this is the fish and tank then according to the pic folder name the tank is a 75g. The blue jaw does seem small at this time and looks to have a lot of swim room and no other large tank mates nor any too aggressive ones, atleast from what can be seen. Well except the Maroon clown lol.

The tank's not exactly full of rock, it looks like (for the size of the tank) the trigger has plenty of swimming room for now. Eventually he'll need as long a tank as you can manage, these guys SWIM.

I don't know what to say about the nighttime behavior, but these fish really shouldn't be spending all day hiding in a cave. From the photo it looks like the other fish are small shy fish that stick close to their territories, and a few angels that also stick close to the rockwork. Having another fish in the tank that doesn't mind swimming out in the open may make him feel more at home. I'd suggest looking around to find another local reefer who's trying to re-home a calm, healthy tang.

Sorry for the delay in response.
Yes you found it. He is in a 75 for now. He has plenty of room to explore but he pretty much just sticks to the left hand side, near his "house"
He does come out, he really only hides when people are around.

There is no one that would bother him in there. LOL The clown is preoccupied with his Anemone, never leaves is.

Other tank mates are 2 Bar Gobies, Mystery Wrasse, Multi color Angel, baby Blue Tang (1/2 inch in size) and a Midas Blenny. Soo he has no one to fear in there.

Like I said all in all I think he is doing fine with the exception of the night time run for the ocean. It's crazy. I guess I will have to wait and see if he gets board with doing it.

I have a sump, UV Light, GFO reactor, HOB Fuge with Macro and PODs Chiller @ 78 degrees

I know the tank looks full of rock in the pictures but it is really not. I would say that I am only using maybe 1/2 of the width of the tank and it piles just a little past 1/2 way up. It is not leaning on the glass either so he has 5 inches between rock and top of the water and 4 inches from rock to back wall, 8 inches from rock to front wall.

I have attached a PIC that shows you a better idea on the rock size in regards to the tank

Its a mystery for sure. I really wish I could hear the thought process going on in there behind that toothy grin. :-)

FYI
If you are interested I added a few PICs on the inhabitants in my profile album :-)
Don't kill me over the PIC quality I only had access to my Black Berry phone. ;-)

Well, a gold stripe maroon clown and a mystery wrasse can be quite aggressive. Is there any interaction?
