blue reef chromis vs green chromis

Looking for opinions on which fish you would go with if you had to choose.
Do they both kill each other off ( although I personally have never had that problem with green chromis) or is one less apt to show this behavior. Thanks

I really like the blue reef chromis for its deep blue color.

I've never had the blue reef chromis, but I've always had the green chromis, and I'm one of those that also has never had a problem w/ them killing each other.
I had the same 6 for 6 years in one tank, and 5 in another tank for about 2 years, also no deaths.

Didn't know the blue reef shipped poorly. LFS will have to hold until I see the fish eating etc. That's if I go with them anyway. Thanks

I had heard about chromis winnowing down to one, so I decided just to go with one, although I have one of each: 1 blue reef and 1 green. I haven't had them long. They were together for about 6 weeks in my QT and they just went into my DT this past weekend. No issues thus far. Sometimes they swim together, and sometimes they swim separately (more the latter than the former). I got the blue reef from my LFS, not online.

P.S...If I had to pick one, I'd go with the blue reef...lovely little fish.

I know the green chromis don't receive a lot of attention or respect I think because they are a common $4 fish, but they add so much to my tank, and as I've read before they really do help bring out shy fish, or they have for me.
It's not uncommon for them to be grouped w/ my anthias, and the colors really pop on both when they do.
I'm not the only person that keeps these successfully, and it's weird to me that so many have issues, and it makes me wonder if there is something we are missing in the mix, like did I get all males/females by chance, or something weird we just don't recognize.
The 6 I had for 6 years were able to share my sea anemone's w/ my maroon until she matured, and since I had two bookend nems, they would still go into the unoccupied nem, sometimes I wonder if the fact I keep nems makes a difference.
All I know is they are prettier in person than pics since that color shifts all the time, and they will always be in my tank.

These are the 6 I had for 6 years

davocean,

I really agree with your comment about the colors popping on both species when anthias and chromis school. I've see it before and it is simply an amazing sight. I went diving in the Solomon Islands and on one dive there was a reef projection where a literal cloud of chromis, anthias, pyramid butterflies and fairy wrasses were swarming feeding on tiny plankton that I couldn't see. The flashing colors were unbelievable. My dive buddy and I just lingered there watching this jaw dropping sight. It was the most beautiful sight in nature that I've ever seen.

Thanks for that.Nice to see. As I say, I too have never had a kill off issue with these fish-had 6 for 8 months without issue in a 130. Why? Who knows. Didn't realize I would have 1-2 in short order according to the what I have read here. But it seems common. Thanks again.

Davocean, lovely collection of fish. I am about to begin filling a 125g and would love to know what else you have other than the blue green chromis.

How many Anthias? And what varieties? Etc.
