Blue Ring Octopus in Naperville

I have had an octopus, they are incredibly cool. They are highly intelligent and very entertaining. They are also very frustrating. They will eat anything and everything and they can escape through the most minor openings. You have to seal the tank extremely well or they will get out.

As far as the BRO, they are very dangerous, but I don't know how prone to biting they are. All octopuses bite, but you really have to try hard to get one to bite you. Given the venomous bite, I would imagine the BRO is more prone to biting, but I would still bet that they bite only when they are threatened and with reasonable handling, they could be kept rather safely in an aquarium.

I think they could come in handy also. Look how James Bond used one in Octopussy. If someone broke into my house, I could push their face through the tank and make short work of them.

With the lack of knowledge in that store it a surprise that no one has been killed. The livestock is doomed.

A waver is just a cheep way of not taking the responsibility if somthing should happen.

Charles,
I am not condoning the sale of a poisonous animal in a non-specialized, retail outlet. In addition, this post is not meant as a personal attack on you, I understand your point. However, I don’t understand why you continually post defamatory & mean spirited emails directed at PetLand in Naperville. Every time they are mentioned or an LFS survey is out, you post one (and often multiple) remarks that deter potential customers from even visiting the store.

LFS stores have a difficult enough time surviving as it is; and I believe it is in all of our best interests to have local outlets to purchase livestock. Are there areas where they can improve? Absolutely. Will constructive & even negative threads help teach these new pet store owners what is important to â€"œUS-, so that we will frequent their store & help them survive? Yes, I hope so. I am all for free speech & I know for a fact that Adam & Mike want to improve their store.

We’ve met several times & I have invited you into my home. In fact, when we talked at the grand opening, you blamed the fish & coral selection, including the dis-proportionate amount of large fish on PetLand corporate fish buying requirements. There are always 2 sides to a story & I am not interested in reliving the past. I try to stay out of all of the drama on RC, but I am not the only one who has noticed your continual negativity towards PL. I can’t help but think that some of your posts have deterred potential customers. This forum has so many anti-PL threads that they do not even offer the CMAS discount anymore. That’s not good for anyone.

In the interest of full disclosure, I admit to negative posts against Scott’s several years ago before I really “got it.” RC is a great forum for information, which includes warning others from wasting time & money. You are free to continue to bash them if you wish, but my opinion is that our community would be better off with ‘more’ strong, successful local stores.

Octopi should not be kept in home aquariums. $0.02.

We can agree to disagree. I believe that octopuses make great pets. The octopus I had was a Mediterranean Dwarf. She had an incredible personality and was amazing to watch. I would have one now, but I really don't want to dedicate an entire tank to just an octopus.

Here honey, here is a nice little octopus for you. Make sure to hand feed it everyday...he especially likes to be tickled.

I live right around the corner from this PL -

I might buy it and send off to my ex :D

You know what is worse...there is a shop in Tinley Park...Capture the Sea..they have a Remora Shark in what looks to be a 55g tank...this thing is close to 2 feet if not more in length.

It has enough room to turn around, swim a foot or two and then back around. I'm not sure if that was a temp setup as they had a much larger tank, but either way it wasnt pretty...not to mention the 300 price tag.

There are some things that should not be in a home aquarium. It dose not matter who has the item in ?. I would have said the same thing about any store. When you keep a item that is a deadly as that it is the fault of the owners for not being well informed about what they are keeping. Yes I might seem anti P/L but that is all from a store that is not willing to learn from mistakes. And telling half truths, all too make a sale. I would turn down sales if I thought that animals would cause harm to the owners, or are not a right match for them. It's all about the all mighty dollar and that is the wrong way to look at customers.

Question.....what happens to the liability that is incurred on the employees of the store (whatever store it may be in)?

I cannot imagine the lawsuit of someone who works at a LFS that happens to be carrying a BRO and a worker gets DEAD from some stupid move or mistake in the tank.

It's a stretch, but similarly what happens to a LFS if a worker is unknowingly allergic to the Lionfish venom and they go into shock and die?

Was just a thought I had. BTW I am in the camp of free enterprise, but if I were the owner of a LFS, I would not carry things that could inflict this kind of damage and still be able to sleep at night with a clear conscience.

Just my rambling.

They could be liable if they do not warn of the dangers of this critter and someone buys it then decides to play/hold it or whatever and dies.

I like the link under the quick facts..."you'll die within minutes"..."Stuffed animals for sale"...love the irony.

Thanks for the post. I Googled and learned some cool stats, I wasn't very familiar with them before.

There is some great info here
Quick Facts

The blue rings are only visible when the Blue-ringed octopus is about to attack
It has a tiny, parrot like, beak that can bite through your wetsuit
The Blue-ringed octopus is only the size of a golf ball but still carries enough poison to kill 26 humans in minutes
The poison is not injected but comes from it's saliva
They are found in shallow coral and rock pools in Australia

What to do if you get bit!

The bite of the blue-ringed octopus may be painless but it is definitely deadly. Its venom contains some maculotoxin which is more violent than any animals found on land. This poison is 10,000 times more potent that cyanide. Upon being bitten, the victim’s nerve conduction is stopped and paralysis sets in after a few minutes. Paralysis is then followed by death. Some symptoms are as follows:

*Nausea
*Blindness
*Loss of all other senses

Right...I understood the liability of selling it to someone would be huge, but I was thinking about the shop workers, who would potentially be taking a fatal risk if required to work in that tank.

Here is what I was thinking:

Your 16 year old daughter is working in a LFS where they have this type of Octopus. The manager says "Go feed the marine livestock" So she goes off to the fish tanks and feeds per some regimen.

She happens to be in the tank, and this BTO for some unknown reason (maybe he's cranky) inflicts a bite on the worker.

So...short story over...your daughter is dead from the bite, and I'd guess that you would be filing a wrongful death suit against the LFS owner and/or corporation for the loss.

So...I could not see the LFS having any chance of beating something like that, even if the "Manager" is the one who takes the bite, unless they are the owner of the place (mom and pop stores) , I'd guess some corporate entity still gets sued.

What kind of corporation would knowingly subject themselves to that kind of risk? Sure you could put signs up saying "Warning" or "Danger" but if you are retailing this thing, someone has to get it out of there at some point.

Just seems way too risky for anyone to carry an animal that could kill that quickly and convincingly.

Maybe this is why it is in a tube inside a tube?

Don't get me wrong, I find it highly odd that some chain pet store would carry a BRO in it's store. I think it is very silly and likely very dangerous. You do not impulse buy a BRO nor would you sell one to a person that would impulse buy a BRO.

I am not opposed to someone owning one, but it should be special order, special handling, etc.

...You do not impulse buy a BRO...

I'm gonna beg to differ  People do some stupid things.

Yes, I know. You do not impulse buy a BRO like you do not:

1. Dry your hair with a blow dryer while sitting in the bath tub
2. Grab the posts on your car battery to see if it is charged
3. Spit into the wind
4. Pee on an electric fence
5. Lick a frozen ice cube tray

Grrrrrrr

Grrrrrrr

I just got back from the Naperville Petland - Went to see the BRO (he was hiding I guess, cuz I never saw it)

They should be ashamed and their fish dept should be closed.

There were no less than 6-7 dead or dying fish in the salt water tanks - Anthias, basslets, damsels, blue tang - Purple tang riddled with ich - Didn't bother looking at the freshwater side.

Noone inquired to see if I was interested in "help" although there were 2 employees in the aquatic section - Probably a good thing they didn't - I was pretty disgusted.

They had some pretty nice live rock in the rear tanks, but marked "Not for sale" Corals up front were pretty pitiful

How come it's okay to leave the dead fish in the tanks? What if it was a dead puppy or kitten in their little glass boxes in the front of the store?

I'm done with that place - Used to go there for the random supply or snails for my mantis.

The BRO was in one of the first tanks in the saltwater section facing the rest of the store (perpendicular to most of the other tanks). Actually on the other side of the tanks with the Not for Sale signs on them.

I think it was the bottom right tank
