Blue Spot Jaw Fish

I have a well established 100 Gal Tank. I have tried to keep a Blue Spot but have been unsuccessful. Has anyone had luck keeping one. If so what is the trick.

None of mine have jumped out of the Tank, they have all died. My local store tells me that none of his patrons have had any luck including him. He believes it is the way they are caught. Any suggestions?

Search for BSJ and Blue Spot Jaw. Seems like a lot are caught using toxic chemicals, and that many also come in with flukes. Not a high survival rate.

I am very interested in this fish as well. I have kept yellow head that always end up jumping. I once read that the BSJ should be the first fish added to a tank as it is very difficult for the fish to adjust to an existing tank with fish already in it. Not sure if it is true but I have been hesitant to get one ever since I read that.

not to get off course of your topic; however, if you want that type of fish consider a pearly jaw fish. lot cheaper, lot more hardy, lots of personality. i too, love the blue spots but never hear to many success stories. good luck.

I just picked a nice 2.5" BSJ up a couple days ago and put him into my 90g. He seems to be doing very well so far. Instantly found a hole in the rockwork and started building a home for the first few days. This morning I woke up to find him in the front right corner of the tank (I'm happy because now I can see him). This is my first one however, and hope he does well in the long run. I put egg crate above the tank but have heard of these guys still getting through. Crossed fingers

Idk if anyone has every had success with this fish long term other thn me but ive recently noticed tht my bsj seems to pick at the live rock i hv and also he eats frozen mysis and baby brine shrimp. If i cud recomend one thing for this fish it wud be to make sure when u get it to give it a freshwater bath before puting it in a quarantine tank and to keep in there for at least two weeks. Also wat i did was i bought a garlic supplement that i soaked watever food i fed him in. And after all this hard work ive had this fish for more thn 4 years and probly another 2-3 at least. Great fish tho def.

A fellow there says he has had his blue spot for 7 years! I've had one for over a year and a half, before it died due to my negligence. The main problem with these fish now is keeping them from jumping out, they do require a covered tank.

While pearlies are nice, imo, there's no comparison with the blue spots.

If you're looking to purchase another one I'd seriously consider getting one from LiveAquaria. They have quarantined their fish in the Divers Den and all are usually eating. Plus they have a 14 day guarantee.

WHY fw dip??

"IMHO
All fish need to have a freshwater dip/bath before getting into your quarantine tank. It is essential for all fishes. There are just too many flukes, external parasites, gill parasites and things on and in newly acquired marine fishes that (especially to the eye of the excited aquarist who just bought the fish) are not readily visible. It is the greatest prophylactic step the aquarist can take to further protect their investment and the health of the newly acquired fish."

i got that off a website but that pretty much sums up why i FW dip!
cheers!
