Blue-spot jawfish -who's had long term success?

Angel*Fish

cats and large squashes
Just wondering if people out there are having success with these..most posts I've read say the fish has died or jumped--

Some say they are collected from slightly cooler waters than our tanks usually have - I'm still wondering if that's true

And I've also read that they may not even be legal to collect

Thoughts and/or comments please?

Awesome fish. One of my favorite for sure. I'm on my second one in 3 years or so. The first was doing great for about two years until I left the cover off of the tank while doing some maintenance. I found him the next day dried up. The second I've had for about a year now & all is fine. I find them to be very hardy fish & eat like pigs from the start. They come from the Sea of Cortez & are usually only seasonal. In the winter you will notice they are very hard to find & almost double in price. As for being illegal in the US I've never heard of this before. I know some fellow reefers in Australia would love to have a bluespot but they are a banned species for them to import. I'll post a few pics of my "spot" later tonight. All I can say is KEEP IT COVERED at all times.:D

Thanks blface & congrats on your jawfish success. I see you have 20 years experience in the hobby... I wonder how much of a contributing factor that is? :D

I didn't know that. What I had heard about them being illegal had to do with exporting them from the country of origin (Mexico I assume) - I'll see if I can locate that thread

Would you mind posting some info about the conditions your fish lives in ? Like tank size, sand depth/type, tank mates...

I had a breeding pair for 2 years and then they survived a 1500 mile trip from new york to florida and survived another 4 months till a now ex friend murdered them by bleaching my tank....
feed them mysis and krill fresh garlic... almost keep the tank sealed any hole even slightly smaller than the fish is an escape hole.... cover drains with screen or gutter gaurd prefferably tapered so if fish jumps onto it they will roll down back into the tank... supply with lots or rubble 1/4 to 5/8" in size I had a 2" sand bed that ended up 5" rubble bed.... id drains are open enough for fish to get in... put screens on intake of pump to protect them from being sucked in but long or large enought to not concentrate the suction...

hense the EX part of friend... he was best friend for 20+ years his wife a friend of 10 did the bleaching.... was manic depresive, bi polar, skizophrenic and other things.... plus had to be center of attention... my stepson came down to visit so she was neglected and wife and son went shopping when came back an hour later she was gone and tank was white and dead... oh was living with them to save money so each of us could buy a house sooner....

OMG How awful. One of my daughters knows someone who has Multiple Personality Disorder. Just like your friends wife, this person can't help it. It's sad, but these people have to be avoided ---their problems are huge and most of us are not equipped to help or handle them. I've met several of the "alters" and though it's interesting- after one of them logged on to my computer and started going thru personal files (key logger) he/they are not allowed to come over any more.

Are you the person who posted photos of a breeding pair several years ago? Those photos were fabulous -

this one could be helped with meds but "she's not sick.. and doesnt need to be on medicine like the rest of her family" and yes my wife had them posted reefaquaria

I found a link to the "mating dance" but there were no photos any more :(

That's kind of awful...my daughter's friend won't get help either. Apparently the point of dissociation is to avoid certain memories and none of the alters wants to face the horror of the abussive childhood

I wonder if she's telling the truth about having schizophrenia - of course there are different situations - but from what I've heard/read these folks are usually in enough mental pain that they would be grateful for a drug that would help lessen the suffering

Wow! Thanks! I know it's hard to look at the photos after what happened. Especially jawfish are so endearing. Tell your wife, reefaquaria, I like her avatar - hope that crazy woman didn't bleach your cat, too!
