Blue Spot Jawfish

Let's talk about these beautiful fish who are loaded with personality.

I am looking to add one into my 45 cube.

These fish need a few inches of substrate in order to burrow, and are jumpers so a covered tank is an absolute must.

Please feel free to share your experience, along with any tips to improve their lifespans in captivity.

Thanks in advance.

There's numerous thread on BSJ's... iirc there's a 10+ page thread on the BSJ disease that seems to be causing their deaths.

Blue spotted jawfish

Love this fish, has tons of personality, just fun to feed and watch. My problem with this fish is Blue Jawfish disease, I read all the time about people reporting sick BJF and after reading some of the write ups I would not get another. The one I did get was great for the whole two days I had him before he jumped through the tank grate. If they can find a place to jump they do. Hope you have better luck.

These are great little fish, with big fish personality.
I had Jose for over 2 years before he found the only hole (1/3") in the tank.
He was not the typical Jawfish. He only entered his burrow at night, and swam mid column with my anthias and tang.

I have had one of these in my nano for about 6 months now. They are such an incredible fish. They are so much fun to watch and are definitely loaded with personality. I highly recommend getting one.

The video was taken after he was in the tank for 1 week. After about a month we would swim into my cupped hand and curl up like a little puppy. He was without a doubt not your typical jawfish.

I have had my BSJF for almost a month. I have about 3 inches of fine sand "caribsea" and i created a burrow for him to stay in. I used some rocks about thumb size each and then stacked a bigger rock ontop. I know i cheated! but it works and looks great! So far I cant tell you anything bad about the fish, but they do have really great personality! here is a link i found and did tons of reading on. I hope this helps...

Just picked mine up tonight!

Anybody have the link to the 10pg thread?

Would like to read it.

thanks,

love those pics and videos Michael cb. Great addition.

How high do these guys jump? I have a canopy that will make the tank completely covered all around, with about 10 inches of height. If they can jump 11 inches or so out of the water (to account for the water level in the tank) then I'm in trouble, and will have to get some netting to go over the back portion.

They can jump at great heights and it is always a concern and problem if a fish can escape do not get one. I mean this fish are a pretty penny and it sucks to lose an animal at this price. It better to die from a disease than carpet surf in my opinion.

Check out the link in the post above yours. It has everything you need to know about bluespot jawfish. It's devoted exclusively to this beautiful fish! I think michael will verify this.

I got sidetracked by that wealth of information for a while tonight. Excellent read. Tons of information.

Here's another topic of conversation: how to properly acclimate the BSJF to your tank.

I've acclimated similar fish before, and after some practice have it down to: drip acclimation, turn the flow in the display down quite a bit, turn the lights off or at least just have the actinics on, and try to feed the fish a half hour or so before starting the whole process.

Any other tips for BSJF?

Would the bsj be compatable with a bicolor blenny. I have the blenny and would love to have the jawfish.

Providing the tank is large enough and suitable for a Jawfish, you will have issues.
The blenny is a rock dweller, while the Jawfish tend to stay on the substrate.

these pictures are great! I have had the experience with two of these beautiful fish. They both jumped out of my tank, but never showed any signs of disease. I have always felt that if you can get a healthy specimen and take the proper preventative actions (dipping, qt) that this is a very good fish to add to an aquarium WITH A LID...
