Blue-Spot Jawfish

mine is fine and i've had him for about 6 months now with just about 1" of sand. He brings sand from other parts of the tank to make a deep mound for his burrow.

One month after introducing him to my tank, the Blue-spot Jawfish continues to do great. He's not intimidated by other fish, and continues to eat everything I feed the tank (including flakes).

He does 'sleep drift'. At night, he will meander from his dug-out, and end up exposed on the sandbed in the morning. I always found it bizaare and kind of annoying. However, after 'sleep drifting' several times, the jawfish seems unaffected and always settles back into its burrow as the lights go on...

I will continue to keep folks updated. The so-called 'blue spot jawfish disease' apparently takes a few months to manifest...

I've now had this blue-spot jawfish (from eBay- of all places) for about 6-7 weeks now. Still bright, healthy, and eating well.

Here's a pic:

A couple more pics... No signs of pastiness, bacterial infection, or the mysterious (mythical or fabled?) "blue-spot jawfish disease". I'll keep folks posted, and continue to monitor "Rodney's" health. (My wife named it "Rodney" b/c it's like Rodney Dangerfield- big goofy eyes and it 'gets no respect' from the other fish).

Can you see "Rodney"?

We kept one for over a year at the LFS I used to work at. Someone bought it, don't know how it is now. Great fish.

He's positively adorable! And those mushhrooms really help set off his orange and blue -- do you think he planned that?:lol:

16 days in tank.

Mine has a green head, the others posted seem to be more orange.
Does anyone think this is a problem?
He's eating anything I feed and sleeps in his hole.

Update: after 2-3 months, the Blue-spot jawfish remains alive and seemingly happy.

No sign of "blue-spot jawfish disease".

Mine jumped last week through 2 layers of nylon netting.
Found it too late.
I haven't had a fish jump out in a long time.

Just want to add my experience with my Blue Spotted Jawfish. I bought one for a 29g nano about a year ago. He has been extremely healthy in my tank. He has a 3" sand bed that he calls home and the tank is kept at 80 degrees. He is still doing great, eats well, colorful, and is very happy in the tank.

To all the naysayers, I would check your sources. If you keep buying fish from the same vendors and/or putting them into the same tank, maybe that is your problem, not the fish.

I'm sorry about the loss. Bummer. I've had watermelon wrasses and flamehawks jump from my previous tanks.

This time, I enclosed the entire tank w' eggcrate, and b/c I don't have a refugium or wetdry, I have no prefilter to worry about...

To Pinkie- I agree with your assessment. In the case of this jawfish, every person's experience is unique. The speculation about 'blue spot jawfish disease' seems over-simplified and unfounded...

So, I'm not sure eggcrate could stop your bluespot if it made an attempt.

Ime BSJ are NOT a good fish to keep in an aquarium if you are worried about wasting money. I had 1 that was great for a week then stopped eating and died a few days later. The 2nd never started eating despite my best efforts. 3rd jumped out even with eggcrate... He kept jumping and jumping until he finally made it out the same day I got him you could hear him hitting the egg crate all night.... After that I changed out the eggcrate so I wouldn't loose anymore of my bsj. Now on my 4th he has been doing great and eating like crazy had him for 2 months… I guess only time will tell, this is the LAST BSJ that I will buy

To All-

After 4 months, the same Blue-spot Jawfish (purchased from eBay and named "Rodney" by my wife) remains healthy and happy!

He eats any type of food, but craves squid & shrimp. He swims backward which is cool. Sometimes, his burrowing becomes annoying b/c he buries my nice blue mushrooms & yellow polyps...

Anyway, I maintain that 'blue-spot jawfish disease' is more fable than fact. If collecting practices are sound (and the tank is well covered), I can say, firsthand, that these fish adapt well to aquaria...
