Blue SPS end up going Purple....

Not sure why, but I always have my blue sps corals, turn into more of a purplish color. Shaded spots tend to be a mixture of purple and fluorescent green, but I want the blue back!

I have experimented with different lighting intensities, but only lightens the purple, doesn't bring back the blue. (250 watt Radiums)

I don't dose anything special, just water changes weekly, feed fish, and maintain big three with two-part. I have also experimented with higher nutrient levels as well, which just made the purple take on a brownish look. However, low nutrients led to a pale purple....

Don't get me wrong, the purple these corals produce is very nice, but really would like the blue back!

Thanks for any advice....

Any pic

I dont buy red sea products, but a place to start gathering information about different nutrients could be a vendors site selling red sea's color kits. I recall something about potasium having an affect on blues... dont take my word for it, its something like that where different nutrients affect colors.. if you want to start reading about chemistrys, that may be a place to start.

I have no issue keeping blue.

Two four hundred watt Radiums over a 90
A lot of feeding fish
Even more w/ nutrient removal, I.e., Vodka, skimming, Seachem Matrix rock, weekly GFO and Rox carbon changes, large weekly water changes......

Very, very blue.

I'm gonna say that first off there are only 3 "Blue" corals commonly available. Oregon Tort, Blue Matrix, and Tubbs Blue Zoos. Most other corals sold as "Blue" are not really blue, but rather blue-green or purple-blue. What corals did you buy that you think are not turning "blue"?

I'm with Joe, a lot of the so-called "blue" corals are actually purple-y blue. Although I'd add echinata & some strains of hoeksemai to his list.

The one in particular was sold to me as a "Cali Blue Tort", which to my eyes was an extremely deep blue in his tank. Mine, it is just somewhat more purple, with blue tips.

I'd say about half of the google images that pop up show the blueness I am looking for from this tort, the other half have the purple look, it is probably partly genetic, but I know I have a good specimen as it was blue before.

Guess I will just work on the usual response - water quality and strong lighting.

Seems colors always fade when I do this though.

Cali torts seem to have a green tint. Not true with the oregon tort, it is a true blue coral.
