I've also loved these fish, but have been wary of their reefsafe-ness. According to Fishbase they prey on tube worm tentacles and "other invertebrates", which I assume to be tunicates etc. They don't get too big (about 5"), so I wouldn't think any damage done in a large, densely populated tank would be very noticeable, and supposedly they're pretty hardy, not to mention beautiful. Anyone here ever keep a blue striped butterfly? If so, what was your experience, and if not, have you ever successfully kept a butterfly (outside of the pyramids, longnose, CBB) in your reef? Thanks :fish1:

They are listed as difficult at most everyplace I have seen them. Hard to get acclimated to eating prepared foods. I believe it's a corallivore like Meyers, Ornates, and Lavartus BF ect...

I believe you're thinking of a different fish. The blue-striped butterfly I'm asking about is not at all similar to the butterflies you named. Just do a google search of the species name and you'll see which fish I'm talking about

I'm thinking of the right fish, they are difficult to get eating prepared foods and will eat coral without question. There was a thread on here started back in 2008 about the fish you can read about it there. The fish is listed as moderate on QM and when Michael at NYAquatic had one a few weeks ago he had it listed as difficult to maintain. He gets shipments from Hawaii weekly/biweekly and I've only seen the one for sale from him in the past yr

I have had several Hawaiian Blue Strip Butterflys over the years. Had them in fish only tanks. It took a long time to get them to eat anything but frozen brine/mysis but once they did eat flakes they would eat anything. I am sure they would pick on corals. When I would clean the tank they would follow my hand around looking for anything that was stirred up. They do get along with C tinkeri's. I have a small one of each in QT together at the moment. I really like the fish and its personality.
