hey there I have a friend who has a blue tang and I believe he has given up on treating the fish for ich... he says he healthy but not up to standards for his display tank not sure of exact size yet ..my question is how many can I put in a 90 gal tank ...
should I try to take this fish from him and get him back to health.
any ideas he says the color is the prob as it has faded from his treatment with copper ...
any ideas or advice would be appreciated.
food choices as well would be great ..
cheers

why are you asking how many can fit in your tank?
need to know how big the fish is and whether you have the means to properly treat it?
what else is in the tank?

i wouldnt put it in your tank at all regardless of how big your tank is... it has ich, which then means so will YOUR display. id put him in a QT for 9 weeks and treat it. then sell it since it will out grow your tank

Ok guys I may just take him and try ro get him healthy
Then give him away.....he is only small from pic looks to be
1 in or so.....
The reason I asked about how many was I have one in my 90
He is small as well.I won't put 2 in there. I will rehome him as he gets too big..
Now my next question ..... what should I watch for on my blue tang ... ich seems to
Be stress related. ....I took him from a tank that he was in for 2
Months .....should I watch for anything ....
Cheers
Tom

Ich comes from ich, not stress. Stress may just make the parasite have an easier time running its life cycle.

You going to put a fish that you know has ich into your DT? If this is the case, this has to make anyone's top 10 list of dumb things to do. Unbelievable.

no he has had it in qt for several weeks treated with copper ... he had him in there for precaution .... he has given up on him since he got one from someone else , I was gonna qt and asking if two were compatiable in the 90 ,obviously not .. so I will re think this ,but my idea was to get him back to health and give him to someone ...am I dumb to even think of giving the fish a break ..... not looking to jepordize my fish or tank ,just curious as to what more exp would do ... still reading up on the ich and yes it sounds terrible .
so thanks for the info....

Gotcha, I think. You're right, ich is terrible. But it isn't a problem if proper precautions are taken from day 1. This parasite ruins the hobby for far too many folks. Sad, its easy to cure in a QT before it gets to your DT.

You can put a few small blue tangs together for a short period of time, but they will eventually fight. At the LFS I work at we ordered 100 tank raised regal blue tangs and divided them into 2 50 gallon tanks, 4,000 gallons of system volume. They are completely fine and show no aggression toward each other. You must keep in mind that these fish are an inch long at the most and that they will only be together for 3 months at the most. You could put the two tangs together and try to fix the ich problem but I would recommend that you don't. It could lead to a lot of problems.

what is a tank raised regal blue tang?
why would putting 2 tangs together fix the ich problem?

I tried to put (2) 4 inch blue tangs in a 125 gallon and trust me it was a bad idea. And this is a 6 ft tank. Some people get away introducing them at the same time but only in a very large tank.

I wont add him to my system I don't have the room for an upgrade .
I am debating holding this little guy and treating him and giving him away to someone but I am worried that no one will want him ...
thanks for everyones help...I will get the details but I do believe this tang has been treated for preventive reasons ... but since he is in qt tank his color has faded and he does not look appealing ..
thanks again

I'm assuming that by faded color you mean he's developing HLLE? If you have the quarantine tank and know what he needs treatment for, do it. Afterwards try to give him away. HLLE has many causes, and blue tangs are particularly susceptible. With good diet, water quality, and decreased stress, you'd be surprised how quickly it clears up. Good luck to you
