The Rebel XT doesn't have a macro mode. Please explain?

Sorry, I'm a newbie to the Rebel and my friend told me the setting with the flower is macro.......guess not

Thanks for all the compliments everyone

But that doesn't mean it will take true macro photos. With this camera, you need a macro lens. The flower symbol means that camera is automatically going to:

Use Aperture Priority
Use medium ISO
Use a wide aperture
Probably spot meter
Area Auto Focus

Or something like that, I dunno the actual variables. The right side of that dial (or is it left?) with all the symbols (moon, mountain, person, flower, etc) are simply changing the way the camera is SET. This doesn't mean you can take a macro shot. You need a macro lens for this. The symbol side is a decent start for a beginner to become familiar with what the camera can do. Please don't read my post as some sort of elitist "Professionals don't use those symbols." However, once you begin to master what the camera is actually doing, you will begin to use the other side of the dial (Av, Tv, M) and manipulate the camera yourself to many of these same variables.

And I'm still jealous of that clam! Wow!

WOW what a clam!

Here's a list of functions including the close-up function and the settings it uses:

Seems like it just turns off the flash, sets camera to single shot and adjusts aperture to try and get a better depth of field...

If we really want to get picky then many "Macro" lenses don't take true macros either.... just look at how many lenses say "Macro" and can't even get close to 1:1 magnification... It certainly is a term that is often misused.

Thanks guys for the compliments and pointers on the new camera. By this time next year I should have the thing figured out.
