Blue Throat Trigger

Shellyfish

I've recently added one of these to my tank, he was in QT for 4 weeks, eating mysis well. Since being added to the DT I have not seen him, he swam around for a bit then hid in the rocks and has been there since. I'm just concerned about him not eating. Anyone with experience with these guys?

I have a pair (male and female) and both are active swimmers. Both actually start eating (pretty much everything I feed) the first day in my DT. There is no significant aggression from or toward them. When they hide, it's normally due to me making a sudden movement but they seem to get use to this very quickly. I consider both to be very easy to feed and care for.

I imagine your fish would be fine. A few days without food should not have any long term healthy affect on the fish.

I'm used to fish hiding when they are first introduced, but I kinda expected to see him today, although I guess it's only been about 24hours since he went in. I'm just paranoid becuase a friend of mine had 3 die on him after they hid and didn't eat. I don't want to lose this guy, he/she is beautiful and triggers are my favorite

I bought my pair via a trade from a local reefer so the fish are healthy to begin with. I am surprise your friend had such a bad luck feeding them. Mine absolutely devour everything I feed (Mysis, pellet, Ova, Formula 1 and 2, Rods', etc) and would't stop eating unless I stop feeding.

I agree they are amazing fish. Having a pair of trigger swim around adds so much to the tank.

Wow, I really hope mine turns out like yours. I really like this fish and would be so sad if I lost it. I fed mysis tonight, but he did not make an appearance, everyone else was thrilled though.

Its not uncommon for them to hide for a week or two after being introduced. I wouldnt be worried at all just yet. My old one stayed in a cave for 6 days when I first got him.

Ok so, I was sitting in front of the tank on my comfy couch and I dozed off. When I woke up guess who was out and about? He didn't stay out long, but the fact that he was out must be a good thing. I also saw where he went back into the rocks, so I may try to direct some mysis that way.

I also found out bit more from the guy who lost 3 of them, he said they starved to death in a week, that seems like a pretty short period of time to die from not eating.

You want to get him eating quickly!! He can go a few days... If he's healthy, he will come out...

You QT the fish for 4 weeks and he ate well? If so, a few days without food wouldn't hurt him. He should have been well conditioned for the 4 weeks in QT. How long has it been to the DT without eating? How big is the fish and what's the overall health?

I was gonna ask about size as well. I have an 8 Inch male Blue Throat that started eating the same day I put him into display. I pressume yours is smaller?

I have had blue throats 3 times. First time was a 4 inch male. Fish hid for 3-4 days, never came out and died in the rocks.

Second I bought a pair. They both hid for 2 days, but then starting picking at food by Fay 3-4 and did well. I lost those in a bad tank move.

Last one is the 8 Inch male I had now.... Are you feeding bigger meaty foods? Try prawn, krill in moderation or some clam.

Good luck!!

If he was eating Mysid well keep feeding that. PE Mysid is really good stuff. I use Jumbo Hakari Mysis... My fish love it. Bigger pieces, less waste and nutrients in water...

I forgot to ask, what kind of tank mates are in there? And size?

Triggers are very hardy, don't worry! Your sounds like it will be fine...

He's probably about 4" and was eating mysis well. I've had him in the DT for about 48hours now.

Since he was eating well in QT, several days without food in the DT is not going to hurt him. Remember, he's probably getting some food anyway, just not when you're feeding.

48 hours are really nothing. Since he ate in QT, it probably mean he's still trying to adjust and just didn't feel comfortable eating. If he's unhealthy, he probably wouldn't eat in QT as well.

Are there any fish showing aggression or pick at him?

He was out again just now, but went back into hiding when I tried to quickly throw some food in for him. I've seen no signs of aggression toward him from anyone else, they all just kinda ignore him. It is a 150g tank, stock is: 1 mimic tang, 1 yellow tang, 1 azure damsel, 1 purple firefish, coral beauty, bi color blenny, 2false percs.

It would be nice if I could feed him without him seeing me lol!

That's very typical:

When they hide, it's normally due to me making a sudden movement but they seem to get use to this very quickly.

My female is still easily scared but both quickly learn and adopt. Don't worry about it. In a couple more days, he will eventually learn and come out to eat. By then, you will wish he would stop eating so much. :)
