He is probably out looking for rubble to make his den with.
He needs for you to give him a rubble/rock pile near his hole.
Add to it frequently (i break up rock with a hammer to give mine) and enjoy the outrageous show- they are amazing stone masons!
At least 4" sand bed is a must imho. They will build up (and down) from there.
