Bored, need ideas!

I never thought I'd get bored of my reef, but here I am. It's a 77gal. low-medium light set up. I currently have a pair of clowns, a dottyback, yellow wrasse, flame angel and a mid size majestic angel. I had bought the majestic to eventually go in a bigger tank when I move, but now I'm not even sure a bigger tank is going to happen. I've got the reefing blahs? I'm looking for fish ideas as the coral selection doesn't matter too much to me. The fish can be to add to the ones I have or to replace the ones I have. Thanks for any thoughts!

Why not re-aquascape? or make some other dramatic aesthetic change. Maybe you could upgrade lighting so that you can keep more corals.. and that part of the tank would be more interesting for you.

Maybe a colorful wrasse would make a good addition... Something like a 4 line, (Pseudocheilinus tetrataenia) or a Solon Fairy (Cirrhilabrus solorensis).

I hope this spurs some thought..

First pair your angel (get a smaller one), and what kind of dottyback? Depending on the species I would recommend you pair it too.

Pistol shrimp and goby pair (I would pair the goby too).

Again depending on the dottyback you could probably add firefish, flasher wrasses, basslets.

Maybe a kole or yellow tang.

Cardinalfish!

Anthias might be a good choice depending on the species.

Thanks for the suggestions! I've tried higher light corals, it didn't do much for me. I can't re-aquascape b/c my rocks are all attached together. My dottyback is a tank bred fridmani, how would I go about pairing them?

You can add another fridmani and they will work it out. Fridmani is probably the best dottyback you could have, it isn't very aggressive usually. In that case you could probably add some more peaceful fish, but I would probably pair your flame angel (they will spawn nightly if you have warmer temps and a twilight period on your lighting schedule), pair your dottyback, and add a goby/pistol shrimp pair, then see where your tank is at. If it still is lacking something I might consider a group of threadfin cardinalfish.

I have a rogue pistol or mantis shrimp in my rockwork somewhere, the noise drives me nuts so I think I'd skip the goby/shrimp pair. :) There are some cool gobies out there though, hmm. How about an eel, either a snowflake or a zebra? Do I even have room for a full grown zebra, I'm thinking no but there are conflicting opinions on tank size as usual. Pairing the flame angel is a thought, it's just hard to get small juvie flames around here.

Mantis shrimp and pistol shrimp are totally different!

I don't know if I'd recommend an eel with all the small peaceful fish either.. it may work for a while, but I probably wouldn't try it.

If your bored, I'd go for a drastic change to something new. Adding a fish is only going to apease you short term. Sounds like you want a new challenge.

Pairs or harems are good ideas...........maybe with fish you don't have right now. Swap out the old fish for new ones. Creating your own pairs is more rewarding than just buying them & also less expensive.

Try a biotope tank.................all the fish from the same area.
